DescriptionLewis Payne talks about having to walk to Lewisport to get the train to St. John's, where he would join a vessel going to the seal hunt. The trip from the Town of Fogo to Lewisport was a two day trip. In the winter he walked over the ice. Leaving the Town of Fogo he would take the Waterman Brook Trail to Waterman Brook. Once there someone in a punt would come over and bring him to Deep Bay. From there he would walk to Island Harbour. From Island harbour, the closest point to Lewisport, he would walk from over the ice. In St. John's, Lewis joined the sealer 'Codroy'; he also remembers a sealing vessel called the 'Clarenville' that he did not join. Lewis remarks that he made no money sealing.
