| Transcript | He longed to cram it all into his pusser's chest and chuck it overboard, the whole entangled botch; and tell his Captain he was making a clean breast of things, and volunteer to stand the middle watch. Or else evade his mother's eye, her weary shrug, while she was in the kitchen making him his tea, and sweep the broken vow beneath the threadbare rug that stretched across the room from sea to sea. Fear, whatever depths that filial guilt may plumb, can rise and drift ashore upon some filthy tide; and he foresaw stout men in blazoned aprons come to take the carpets up when she had barely died. And there is no away to get to, nor to throw the neighbours' garbage into; nor could he let his vade-mecum perish, with its crazy row of patchwork numbers and its dog-eared Alphabet. |
