Newfoundland and Labrador--Politics and government
Scope and Content of FondsThe papers detail the literary activities of Ray Guy, one of Newfoundland's most prolific writers, satirists, and political critics; particularly his columns for The Evening Telegram and other local publications. They provide a survey of the provincial public and political issues that demanded attention and commentary over the years, such as resettlement, industrialization, and the political antics of Joseph R. Smallwood. There are also drafts of plays and sketches written by Guy while engaged in performing arts and theatrical activities. Other materials such as correspondence with fellow writers and questionnaires done by readers reveal where Guy found many of his topics. Also found within the collection are contracts with various publishing houses in the St. John's, providing a glimpse at the financial aspect of literary work, especially publishing. This collection documents the career of one of Newfoundland and Labrador's most prolific literary figures; and records public opinion and debate surrounding some of the province's most significant people and events.
