Spencer, Erle Rose
TitleSpencer, Erle Rose
Scope and Content of FondsThis small collection of writings and personal documents are a scant remainder of the life of Erle Spencer (1897-1937), whose publications include nine novels and an unknown number of newspaper columns. This collection consists of unpublished manuscripts for two short novels and three short stories, his passport from the 1920s, a photograph and several documents concerning his estate, which devolved to his brother, John Spencer. The photograph is especially welcome, as the only previously known photograph of Spencer was a poor reproduction which appeared in newspapers at the time of his death. The manuscript provides new insights into his writing, while the passport helps to determine his travels in Europe, documenting time he spent in Switzerland, where he often travelled for his health. The artwork for the dust jackets of two of his books have since been added to this collection.
