| Scope and Content of Fonds | The Stirling family of Twillingate can trace its ancestry back to the Peytons of Twillingate on the - maternal side and the Stirlings of Harbour Grace on the paternal side. Ann Peyton Stirling was a - grand-daughter of John Peyton (1747-1827), who had settled at Lower Sandy Point at the mouth of the - Exploits River, just west of Twillingate, by the 1780s. He brought his son, John (Ann Peyton Stirling's - father), out from England in 1812, to help in his fish business. John Peyton, Junior, (1793-1879) married - Eleanor Mehaney of Carbonear in 1823. - - Dr. William Stirling was one of eleven sons of Dr. William Stirling and Emma Mayne - of Harbour Grace. The senior Stirling had immigrated to Harbour Grace from Ireland in the first decade of - the nineteenth century, where he established a very successful medical practice. The junior Stirling - started his practice in Twillingate in the early 1840s, shortly after his graduation from medical school in - Scotland. - - These documents relate mainly to Dr. William Stirling and to his daughter Georgina Ann Stirling, although - there are several items which relate to other members of the Stirling family. These documents include - correspondence to or by members of the family, family documents, including Dr. William Stirling's last will - and testament, and newspaper clippings recording news (obituaries, concert announcements, reviews) - affecting the family. - - |
