| Scope and Content of Fonds | There are a number of well-known images of the destruction and damage caused to the people and communities of the Burin Peninsula by the tidal wave which swept its coasts on November 18, 1929. The three images which form this collection are not as common as some others, but they were part of a number which were printed as postcards and made available for sale. These three were kept by Matilda Kelly, a young schoolteacher in Point au Gaul in 1929, where she witnessed the destruction of the tidal wave first-hand. The images captured here are representative of the types of damage caused by the tidal wave, providing a visual accounting often lost in textual and oral reports. |
