it.
It
was
created
and
published
by
Merian
,
who
inherited
the
de
Bry
publishing
business
when
he
married
Theodore's
granddaughter.
This
scene
depicts
John
Guy
and his
men
interacting
with
Beothuk
Indians
in
Newfoundland.
The
exchange
of
European
goods
for
native
handiwork
is
shown
in the
foreground
, and
is
a
portrayal
of
Guy's
successful
contact
with the
Beothuk
at
Bull
Arm
in
1612
,
which
featured
the
exchange
of
gifts
and a
meal
together.
The
text
that
accompanied
the
image
when
it
was
first
published
is
a
German
translation
of
John
Guy's
description
of the
meeting.
The
image
was
first
published
in
1628
in the
German
version
of
Volume
XIII
of the
Americae
series.
