Abstract
The
main
purpose
of this
study
was to
determine
the
van
Hiele
levels
and
proof-writing
achievement
of
grade
10
students
in
Newfoundland.
Another
aspect
of the
study
was to
determine
the
relationship
between
students'
van
Hiele
levels
and their
proof-writing
achievement.
Other
concerns
of this
study
included
trying
to
determine
any
sex-related
differences
between
van
Hiele
levels
and
proof-writing
achievement.
--
The
sample
consisted
of
201
students
on the
Avalon
Peninsula
in the
province
of
Newfoundland.
Each
student
was
administered
two
tests.
One
test
attempted
to
determine
the
students'
Van
Hiele
level;
the
other
test
was
given
to
determine
the
students'
proof-writing
achievement.
The
tests
were
administered
over
a
two-week
period
in
latter
part
of
May
,
1983.
--
The
average
van
Hiele
level
was
found
to be
2.29
and
1.45
using
the
3
of
5
and
4
of
5
criteria
respectively.
--
A
significant
relationship
was
found
between
the
students'
assigned
van
Hiele
levels
and their
proof-writing
achievement.
No
sex-related
differences
were
found
between
students'
van
Hiele
levels
and their
proof-writing
achievement.
