Isabella
Whiteford
,
whose
Methodist
parents
immigrated
to
Newfoundland
in
1850.
By her
second
volume
, The
Victorian
triumph
and
other
poems
(1898)
, she was a
well-known
literary
figure
in the
colony.
Poems
contains
some
120
pieces
,
many
Christian-themed
and
covering
both
Newfoundland
and
Irish
subjects.
In
addition
to
traditional
topics
such
as
nature
and the
passage
of
time
,
Whiteford
also
drew
inspiration
from
historical
and
local
community
events
,
such
as
Wolfe's
victory
at
Quebec
, the
loss
of a
sailor
at
sea
, and
parish
fundraising
efforts.
