DescriptionPoems (1860) is the first volume of poetry by Isabella Whiteford, whose Methodist parents immigrated to Newfoundland in 1850. By her second volume, The Victorian triumph and other poems (1898), she was a well-known literary figure in the colony. Poems contains some 120 pieces, many Christian-themed and covering both Newfoundland and Irish subjects. In addition to traditional topics such as nature and the passage of time, Whiteford also drew inspiration from historical and local community events, such as Wolfe's victory at Quebec, the loss of a sailor at sea, and parish fundraising efforts.
