DescriptionThe author had spoken to many short story writers, and most indicated they would have liked to have had a handbook of some sort to guide them in the process; this book is Gallishaw's version of a short story handbook, which focuses on his four discoveries for short story writers. These include the relationship between functional and structural norms, the addition of the structural unit called scene, how the main character must either make a decision or accomplish something, and finally, how a short story is told either chronologically of through flashbacks.

About the AuthorGallishaw was born in Newfoundland, and studied at Harvard. During the Great War he returned home to join the Newfoundland Regiment, and later served as both an intelligence officer with the US Army and a liaison officer with British forces. After the war Gallishaw returned to Harvard, this time to teach, eventually opening a school for creative writing in Cambridge.
