DescriptionHarvey's account of the history of Newfoundland from discovery to 1885 relates the political and social conditions that molded Newfoundland from a seemingly uninhabitable wasteland to a thriving British colony. Harvey describes development from a complete lack of any laws , through government by fishing admirals, and the first usage of English law and order in the New World, through to Responsible Government. The French and English battles are examined, as are the religious struggles between the Roman Catholics and Protestants. Harvey discusses Newfoundland's abundant resources, the fishery, farming, forestry, and mining industries. Momentous events including the addition of Labrador to Newfoundland, the great fire of 1846, and the laying of the first Atlantic cable in 1858 are described. Harvey concludes with a look to future for Newfoundland with growth in population and prosperity. -- Several items tipped-in: poems, Vignettes from Newfoundland History, by Spero Meliro; and A Remembrance: The Destruction of Saint John's by Fire, 9th June, 1846, by W.F.. Also an article from the London Daily Chronicle on the great fire, the total population from the 1922 census, and statistics on fish-producing countries of the world.
