Daniel Woodley Prowse (1834-1914), born in Port de Grave, is best-known as a judge, essayist and historian. In addition to his famous History of Newfoundland (1895), Prowse also produced several editions of his Newfoundland Guide Book (1905), contributed to the newly-established Newfoundland Quarterly magazine, and created a legal manual for outport justices that was used for many years.
