DescriptionThis book gives a thorough description of early disease and medicine in Canadian and Newfoundland history. In the first of two volumes, Heagerty describes many of the diseases that badly affected early Canadians, the physicians and societies worked to eradicate the diseases, early medical methods, and finally the early days of public health in Canada. Newfoundland and Labrador are mentioned throughout the first ten chapters, as each of the small-pox, cholera, typhus, and influenza that killed many Canadians epidemics killed many within her borders as well. Also of note is how Newfoundland was the first place in the Americas to use the small-pox vaccine.
