Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association Publications, 1958-2008
The Newfoundland Medical Association (NMA), a non-profit organization funded primarily by its members, was formed in 1924 by a group of Newfoundland physicians. While it was originally a voluntary association, membership is now required by the province's Medical Act for all practicing physicians in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. http://www.nlma.nl.ca/
The Newfoundland Medical Association Newsletter was first published in September 1958 and continued until November 1977. The name was changed to Newfoundland Medical Association Journal with Vol. 20, No. 1 (February 1978) and ceased publication with Vol. 22, No. 3 (August 1980). The name was changed to NMA Communiqué with Vol. 6, No. 1 (March 1987), ceasing publication with Vol. 11, No. 3 (November 1992).
In 1993, the Newfoundland Medical Association changed its own name to the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA) and therefore renamed their newsletter NLMA Communiqué with Vol. 12, No. 1 (March 1993), ceasing publication with Vol. 19, No. 2 (Spring 2000). The name was changed to Nexus with Vol. 19, No. 3 (Summer 2000), which continues today.
The Faculty of Medicine Founders' Archive (FMFA) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association (NLMA) partnered in 2008-2009 in a project to digitize the association's newsletter, which was and still is a means both to connect all the physicians and surgeons in Newfoundland and Labrador and to inform upon happenings in the medical profession throughout the province.
