Over fifty decorated initials, two- to four-lines or even larger, in blue or red with red penwork infilled with green and with penwork extensions. Some stray marginal annotations, additions, and corrections. Two quires were rubricated in a bright blue ink and have no decorated initials -- Binding: Restored medieval binding, probably original, of blind-stamped tooled calf over bevelled oak boards with brass clasps (straps missing) and corner mounts --

Book of hours, of Premonstratensian use Book of hours, of Premonstratensian use Books of hours--Texts--Early works to 1800; Illumination of books and manuscripts; Manuscripts, Medieval; Catholic Church--Prayer-books and devotions--French; Catholic Church--Prayer-books and devotions--Latin Manuscript from Southern Netherlands, probably the county of Hainault. -- "Written in dark brown ink in a gothic liturgical hand, rubrics in red, capitals touched in yellow... thirteen 3-line initials with partial borders of sprays of colored and gold leaves and petals. Twelve large illuminated initials with full illuminated borders, the initials 4 lines high...Five full-page miniatures in arched compartments in matching full borders...[Binding:] Early sixteenth-century blind-stamped calf over pasteboards sewn on 4 thongs...vellum endleaves, lacking clasps but 2 metal catches remain on lower cover..." (Sothebys, p. 111.) -- Illuminated by a woman artist, Cornelia van Wulfschkercke (d. 1540), a nun of the calced Carmelite convent of Sion in Bruges. (Sotheby's, p. 112.)

Book of hours : use of Utrecht Book of hours : use of Utrecht Books of hours--Netherlands--Utrecht; Illumination of books and manuscripts; Manuscripts, Medieval Decorated manuscript on vellum -- Layout: written in 19 lines between two verticals and 20 horizontals ruled in grey -- Script: written in gothic bookhand in black ink -- Decoration: rubrics in red, text capitals touched red, one-and two-line initials alternately in red or blue, three-line initials alternately in red and blue with flourishing in purple or red to side margin. Six large puzzle initials (p. 26, 98, 140, 182, 228 and 276) in red and blue with extensive flourishing in red and purple to upper and side margins (slightly cropped into flourishing on some leaves, slight cockling to some leaves). -- Binding: Contemporary brown calf stamped in blind with a panel of the Lamb of God in a roundel within a mandorla framed by Siet dat lam Goedes dat boert die sonnen d[er] verl, the symbols of the four Evangelists in the corners, within a triple fillet, two metal clasps and catches (rebacked, the Lamb rubbed on both covers). -- Origin: The Calendar includes saints especially revered in the County of Holland, part of the diocese of Utrecht, with St Bavo, patron of Haarlem parish church in red (2 October). It agrees with the calendars in other manuscripts written by this scribe, identified by Margriet Hülsmann as active in Haarlem c.1455 - c.1465. Bindings with this panel stamp have been attributed to Haarlem c.1450-75, classified by Hülsmann as her type III.a.1 (see 'Met Prosper Verheyden op pad: Noord-Hollandse boekbanden opnieuw belicht). Several religious houses in Haarlem earned money from book production, among them the Augustinian canons of the Visitation, just outside the town, who belonged to the Windesheim Congregation, the monastic exponents of the Devotio moderna. -- Provenance: Major J.R.
