1. Newfoundland Patriot (02 February 1839) Newfoundland Patriot (02 February 1839) Canadian newspapers--Newfoundland and Labrador--St. John's The Patriot and Terra Nova Herald, initially named Newfoundland Patriot and undergoing several other minor name changes along the way, ran from 1833 to 1890. Editor and proprietor Robert J. Parsons was a Protestant member of the Liberal party, a longstanding Member of the House of Assembly, and closely linked to Catholics in the city. As such, the paper contains a great deal of Irish and Catholic news, and represents the political views of his faction. He died in 1883. (Kathleen M. The Fishermen's Advocate (1910-14) was the newspaper of the Fishermen's Protective Union (FPU), edited by its president, William F. Coaker. Initially a weekly, by June 1913 the Advocate was issued daily, reaching a circulation of 11, 000 by that October. This made it one of the most important papers in Newfoundland, carrying local and FPU news. It continued after 1914 under different names. After the first year, Coaker established the Union Publishing Company, owned by FPU members, which took over the paper's publishing. (Diane P.
