It includes the discovery of America by Columbus, as well as information on the Indian tribes the settlers encountered upon reaching New England. Chapters include information on the war between the French nation and the British colonies, as well as discussion of the American War of Independence, including descriptions of several battles.

Chapters describe his departure from New York, moving along the ice-foot and encountering trouble in finding fresh water, sledging across the ice flows, and the loss of supplies. It also describes life among the Esquimeaux Indians, the construction of an Esquimeaux hut, and the Esquimeaux customs and religion. A number of maps and illustrations can be found within this text.

Several sections of this book discuss sport in other countries as well, such as the hunting of wild animals in Africa, or field sports in Asia. There is much information on animals that are frequently hunted, and hunting tips. A number of illustrations accompany the text.
