13. Description of a Christmas play in Nain Description of a Christmas play in Nain Sound recordings; Inuit children--Newfoundland and Labrador--Nain; Christmas--Newfoundland and Labrador--Nain; Christmas plays; Hettasch, Kate Ellen Margarete, 1905-1987 Item is a sound clip of Kate Hettasch providing a description a Christmas play in Nain. She says that when Christmas time came they began preparing for the Christmas play. She asked the boys if they would perform, but they said that they were too shy. Kate finally convinced them to get involved by telling them that they could dress up in costumes and grunt the Christmas songs. After they made the costumes and the scenery and began practicing it was quickly realized that grunting the Christmas songs wouldn't be very entertaining for the audience. Fortunately, the kindergarten teacher agreed to have her 36 students provide the singing for the play. Over 300 people came to the new auditorium to see the performance and everyone was very pleased. The next day Father Christmas, played by the storekeeper John Sweetland, came to town on the Alaska sledge and visited the children in the classrooms. It was very hot work so Kate gave him a cool glass of lemon-aid.

14. Description of the fire in Nain Description of the fire in Nain Sound recordings; Hettasch, Kate Ellen Margarete, 1905-1987; Fires--Newfoundland and Labrador--Nain; Nain (N.L.)--Fire Item is a sound clip of Kate Hettasch providing a personal account of the fire that burned down several buildings in Nain. On the recording she says that on the 30th she went to the store to pick up a few things she needed in the home. It was a quiet evening with a little bit of north westerly wind, but not very much. She settled in for the night, but was rudely awakened at five minutes to five by the phone ringing at full blast. When she picked up she heard a woman hysterically shrieking, "Nain is on fire!" She looked outside and saw all of Nain and the surrounding hills in a red glow. She called the mountie, who had already heard about the fire and was trying to get people out of danger. The mountie's house was burned down. Several explosions were heard as the fire reached fuel tanks. People began putting water and snow on the fuel tanks next to the store to try to prevent the whole community from being destroyed. They had a difficult time trying to contact Goose Bay and Corner Brook to let them know that Nain was in trouble. They managed to get the fire under control by 9 o'clock and Goose Bay was finally contacted to ensure that the community would have a food supply. During her description, Kate mentions the names of the following people who lived in the community at the time of this fire: Herman Webb, Frieda, Siegfried, Gordon & Sally, and Mr. Sweetland (the storeowner). She does not provide the date of this fire.
