142. Armitage root cellar, interior, Portland, Newfoundland. Armitage root cellar, interior, Portland, Newfoundland. Architecture, building and construction; Buildings; Outbuildings; Root cellars; Cellar in Portland, Goose Bay, Bonavista Bay. Dimensions are 2 m x 2.8 m x 1.65 m high. Access is through hatch in upper level shed. Concrete walls, with concrete floor covered by sawdust and planking. Sawdust on floor of roof for insulation purposes. Roof vent on the north side. Believed to have been built by Gilbert Ash in the 1920s and has been in continuous use. It was rebuilt by John Ash, son of Gilbert Ash, in the late1990s. Peter Armitage and Barb Neis bought the property from the Ash family in 2009 and replaced the roof of the cellar in 2010. It is currently used to store cabbage, carrots, potatoes, and paint, and has also been used as a beer cooler in the past.

The cellar was built in approximately 1895 by his grandfather John Lawlor. The cellar is very large measuring at approximately 3.6m x 6.7m with a 2.7m ceiling height. It has a shed structure with a hatch entrance. Cellar has two hatch entrances on either side for ventilation. Originally part of Riverside Farm which in the late 1800’s spanned 16 acres. Today it is used to store some vegetables purchased in bulk from local farmers for him and his wife as well as wine which he brews himself.

144. Duggan 2 Root Cellar, Interior Ladder, Cape Broyle
 Duggan 2 Root Cellar, Interior Ladder, Cape Broyle Architecture, building and construction; Buildings; Outbuildings; Root cellars; Root cellar owned by Cyril Duggan, brother and next door neighbour or Bill Duggan on School House Road in Cape Broyle. It was built in the early 1950’s by their father. Both Cyril and Bill were young boys at the time; however they have memories of helping their father build the cellar. Cellar is still active however Cyril no longer grows vegetables. He purchases his produce from the local meat man. The cellar has concrete wall with metal laid on the floor. Tar has been used to seal cracks in the foundation.

145. Lamswood Root Cellar, Interior Barn, Portugal- Cove St. Phillips

The cellars is located in the barn and enter through a hatch entrance. It is roughly 2.5m x 4m. It has built in pounds and is used even today for the storage of potatoes, carrots, turnip, and cabbage. It was built in the 1850’s by Richard squires. The cellar has been in continuous use since it was built and only undergone minor renovations. These renovations included a small extension, and adding concrete to the stone walls in 1956. The barn above the cellar is used for miscellaneous garden and household storage. Barn has a second floor which at one time was used to store hay. Hatch is made of chicken wire which serves as the only ventilation. Originally it had a wooden chimney like structure that went through the two stories of the barn for ventilation.

 Dalton Root Cellar, Interior Wire Shelf, Cape Broyle Architecture, building and construction; Buildings; Outbuildings; Root cellars; Root Cellar owned by Madonna Dalton on Fairy Pond Road in Cape Broyle. The cellar is a poured concrete foundation with a shed structure on top. The shed has a hatch entrance. It was built by Madonna’s late husband Michael Dalton in 1969. It has not been used for vegetable storage since the late 1980’s. The cellar is located closer to the house rather than the field to make it easier to get vegetables into the house. The Daltons grew their own vegetables until the late 1980’s and since then have been purchasing their vegetables from the local meat man.

 Duggan 1 Root Cellar, Interior Wall and Floor, Cape Broyle Architecture, building and construction; Buildings; Outbuildings; Root cellars; Root Cellar owned by Bill and Anne Duggan on School House Road in Cape Broyle. It was built in 1980 by Bill Duggan and has been inactive since 2010. Bill used to grow his own vegetables, but has not been physically able to since 2008. Today they purchase vegetables from the local meat man. There is one vent located in a back corner of the cellar. This is simply a piece of black piping that allows airflow to the outside. The cellar is constructed out cement with a shed on top that has a hatch entrance. The cement walls of the cellar are eight inches thick

157. English Root Cellar, Interior Stone Wall, Colliers
 English Root Cellar, Interior Stone Wall, Colliers Architecture, building and construction; Buildings; Outbuildings; Root cellars; Root cellar owned by Jean Guthrie and Chris English on Harbour Drive in Colliers. The cellar is believed to have been built in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s by the original owner of the property Richard Skanes. It is a shed structure with a hatch entrance to the cellar. The cellar foundation is built down into a hill and has stone walls. It seems that rocks were mounded up around one side under the grass growth for extra support. There is a vent made of piping that is in the ceiling of the cellar and extends out of a window in the back of the upper shed structure. The cellar measures approximately 2.8 m x 3 m. A unique quality of this cellar is that the son of builder Richard Skanes, also Richard “Dick” Skanes and his wife Nora lived in the shed structure for maybe as many as 3 years while they were building a house for themselves on the property. Their niece, Marguerite Whelan, lived there with them as well. Dick and Nora had several gardens for growing vegetables and filled the cellar every winter. The Shed structure was later used for hay storage.
