House was built by Laughlin family and served as a general store and post office for the community. Interior of cellar is 1.65 m x 2.8 m and is 1.3 m deep.

 Upper Island Cove Root Cellar 5, shed and mound Architecture, building and construction; Buildings; Outbuildings; Root cellars; Former root cellar located in Upper Island Cove owned by Harold Coombes (1921-2004). Date of construction is unknown. Stone foundation with mound built around cellar. Entrance was through hatch in shed constructed on top. Prior to being filled in with dirt in the 1970s, the cellar was divided into pounds and used to store vegetables, primarily potatoes, grown on the property.

Currently owned by James McCarthy’s nephew, Leo McCarthy. Cellar was used to store carrot, potato and turnip grown on property until the late 1990s. Approx. 2009, the underground cellar was filled in but the shed continues to be used for storage.

William Wyse’s (d.1947) root cellar was located at back of bigger white house on left, roughly adjacent to the extension has was added to the house after cellar was removed (approximate middle of frame). A concrete cellar built by William’s nephew John Wyse (not visible in picture) is located behind the smaller white house with brown roof on the right. The land surrounding the properties indicates the location of former gardens.

William Wyse lived in house and grew vegetables in adjacent gardens. Potatoes, carrots, cabbage and turnip were stored in stone foundation root cellar once located at the back of the house, but has since been removed from the property.

Marcella French discusses nursing practices in Newfoundland Employment; Nursing French graduated from The General hospital School of Nursing in 1939. She talks about her time in nursing school and her working in nursing in Newfoundland after graduation. She worked in the sanatorium on Topsail Road in St. John's until it closed and then French went on to work at St. Clare's Hospital until her retirement at 65 years old.
