1957. CAROL
Sing barren tree
One sheet, 13 x 23 cm. Printed on beige card. Two indented vertical lines divide the document into three equal panels. In the right-hand panel is the poem 'Carol'. The left and middle panels are occupied by a stylized tree motif against the background of a stylized sun. The design includes the outlines of two indeterminate winged figures. Above the design is the title 'Carol'.

1958. YOUNG PINE
Should suns descend
One sheet folded once, the upper fold covering half the lower fold. 15 x 19 cm. The upper fold has a wood engraving of a small pine tree with the topmost frond dissolving into an abstract spiral pattern. The uncovered portion of the lower fold has the title 'YOUNG PINE' and the poem in red. The initials 'BH' are in the lower left-hand corner of the engraving.

1959. FOREST
I see the shadow of a tree
One sheet of cream card, 19 x 22 cm. Unfolded but notionally divided into two panels, the left half blank, the right half containing the Poem 'Forest' in black script. Above the poem is a black and white engraving of a stylized tree design and two figures, a speckled bird and a tiger. The initials 'HB' are in the lower right-hand corner.

When all conceived
One sheet, folded once, 22 x 8 cm, untrimmed. With one wood engraving printed in black on paper, 12.8 x 3 cm, depicting a tree by water, with flowers, a bird, and fish, signed B.H., pasted onto the first leaf. A wood engraving of The Gauntlet Press printer's device, a gauntleted fist holding a tree symbol, is superimposed above the colophon. Christmas 1960.

One sheet 35 x 20 cm, untrimmed, with single folds above the title and between the first engraving and second stanza, and between the final stanza and the ornament, as issued. With two wood engravings, in vermilion: two lovers entwined, between the first and second and the second and third stanzas. A small ornament with rules on either side, all in vermilion, is printed below the poem. The colophon is printed in vermilion. Saint Valentine's Day 1969.

One sheet, folded twice, printed on double leaves, 24 x 16 cm, uncut and untrimmed. With one wood engraving of a coiled snake, in black, between the first and second stanzas of the poem. A broken rule, in red, is printed above and below the poem. The 'GP' printer's device, in red, is printed below the title on the title page. This copy is unbound. Fifty numbered copies, some with olive wrappers, were printed. This is copy number 17.

Four sheets, folded twice, printed on double leaves, 26 x 16 cm, uncut and untrimmed. With twelve wood engravings, including a swirl on the title page, in purple. Includes eleven poems, with titles printed in red. Each poem is illustrated with a wood engraving printed below the poem, except for 'Snake', which is printed on the page following: 'Sparrow' with a sparrow, in dark turquoise; 'Otter in Quick Rage' with an otter, in gold; 'Cat in Repose' with a cat, in purple; 'Someone Seen Corvine' with a crow, in deep violet; 'Lioness at Lake Simcoe' with a lioness, in gold; 'Regina Muskoka in Shallows' with a shoreline profile, in deep violet; 'Love from Woolworth' with a goldfish in water, in orange; 'Frog' with two frogs entwined, in light olive; 'Speculation' with two dragonflies, in purple; 'Sometimes' with a spider in its web, in blue; 'Snake' with a snake, in dark turquoise. The title is printed in red on the title page; the GP printer's device, in red, is above the colophon. The binding is green, yellow, and orange marbled wrappers with indigo and green free endpapers. Two other variant bindings also exist: green, yellow and orange marbled wrappers with indigo and dark orange endpapers; and orange marbled wrappers with indigo and dark orange free endpapers. Sixty numbered copies of which this is number 60.
