62. Bowers, Patrick Raymond Bowers, Patrick Raymond This is a small collection of correspondence written by P. R. Bowers during 1896 to Henry James Morgan, - possibly a resident of the Ottawa area. There are four letters concerning the preparation of Newfoundland - entries for a Canadian who's who that Morgan published in 1898. Bowers was to be included in the - volume and he suggested other Newfoundland residents for inclusion and offered to write their - biographical sketches for a fee. There are two copies of a biographical sketch of Bowers, with editorial - changes that appear to have been made by Bowers, and an advertising handbill for the St. John's - business Wyatt Brothers. 63. Bowring Family Bowring Family The Bowring Family papers consists of general family and business-related material, - including correspondence between Edgar Bowring and W. B. Bowring between 1902 and 1907 - and an undated history of the business covering the period 1811 to 1935. Most of the material is post 1940. By far the largest body of material in the collection is a - lengthy (1935-1984) series of correspondence written by P. Derrick Bowring, his wife, Moira Gordon - Baird Bowring, their children and - other members of the Bowring family to Clara Maria Bowring and (until his death in 1949) her husband, - Cyril Bowring. Clara and Cyril were Derrick's parents who lived in England. Derrick and Moira lived on the - Portugal Cove Road outside St. John's. The collection also includes some of Derrick Bowring's personal - correspondence and other documents. - - This collection, particularly the Clara Bowring correspondence, provides an inside look at a - prominent St. John's mercantile family in the middle decades of the twentieth century, a period of much - change for these families as the mercantile base of Newfoundland shifted from a British-dominated to a - Canadian- and American-dominated economy.
