Parsons Photograph Collection This fonds consists of a photograph album entitled Views of Newfoundland, containing 80 monochrome photographs (78 mounted, 2 loose) taken by Simeon H. Parsons, c. 1890-1900. Several of the photos have title captions followed by the initials "S.H. P." A few have an embossed stamp: "S.H. Parsons, St. John's, NF." A few have pencilled titles naming locations. Most of the photographs are horizontal, but some are vertical views. Coll-343

Both wrote extensively mass media, Ted mainly radio, Dora mainly newspapers, each tended cross over other's domain time to time. Both were limited by outside constraints. 124. Ruggles, C.F. Ruggles, C.F. This collection consists, mainly, of photographs taken by Fred Ruggles during the Royal Visit of Princess - Elizabeth and Prince Philip to St. John's, Newfoundland in 1951, the last stop on their tour of Canada. - The visit lasted just 26 hours, from 10:15 a.m. on November 11, Remembrance Day, to 12:15 noon on - November 12, and involved ceremonies at the St. John's waterfront, the St. John's War Memorial, the - Church of England Cathedral, Feildian Grounds and Government House. - Ruggles's photographs - document these activities and the people who were involved in them. There are also several other - photographs, one of which documents the "Visualizer", a machine invented by Ruggles. There are - clippings about Ruggles and a copy of a postage stamp which has an image created from a Ruggles - photograph. This material should be of interest to researchers in the history of photography in - Newfoundland and in the 1951 Royal Visit. COLL-234

These papers were generated during the 1960s and 1970s and reflect the author's involvement in local radio, television and stage productions and her work as a poet, short story writer, columnist and editor. - COLL-050

Royal Newfoundland Regiment Royal Newfoundland Regiment This collection consists of copies of photographs taken of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment from 1917 to1918, while the Regiment served in France during World War One. Senate; Correspondence; Photographs; Legislators--Newfoundland and Labrador; Politicians--Newfoundland and Labrador; Education--Newfoundland and Labrador; Newfoundland and Labrador--History Frederick W. Rowe's involvement in the political life of Newfoundland encompasses the first four decades following Confederation with Canada in 1949. He has documented that involvement through the materials contained in this collection. It includes extensive constituency correspondence from his years as Member of the House of Assembly for Labrador (1952-1956), White Bay South (1956-1966) and Grand Falls (1966-1971). There is documentation relating to his responsibilities in a number of Cabinet portfolios, including Education, Highways and Finance. 132. Rompkey, William Rompkey, William This fonds consists of the political papers of William Rompkey during the 23 years he served as one of Newfoundland's members in the Canadian House of Commons. It includes extensive constituency correspondence, correspondence and other documentation from his years (1980-1984) as a member of the federal Cabinet, his parliamentary secretary's files, some Senate and his correspondence with federal government departments on various issues related to Newfoundland. Roche, Edward Patrick Roche, Edward Patrick This collection consists of two formal photographic portraits of the Most Reverend Edward Patrick Roche, Roman Catholic Archbishop of St. John's from 1915 to 1950. Both photographs are undated but were probably taken in the 1930s or 1940s. They show two very distinct pictures of both the cleric and the man: one has him, seated, in priestly robes, reading, seemingly oblivious to the camera; the other presents him in a very majestic pose, in archbishop's regalia, posing for the camera, of which he appears to be quite aware. - - COLL-185

134. Roberts, Edward Roberts, Edward In 1986, Edward M. Roberts donated his political papers to Memorial University of Newfoundland for deposit in the Archives and Special Collections. - The papers document Roberts' involvement in political life, mainly in Newfoundland, from 1963 to 1985. They add significantly to the political collections already on - deposit at the Centre, particularly those of Joseph R. Smallwood (in whose Cabinet Roberts served from 1968 to 1972), John C. Crosbie and Dr. Frederick W. Rowe. - - Of particular significance are the political papers for the period 1964 to 1972 when Roberts was closely involved with the Smallwood Administration, first as - Smallwood's Parliamentary Assistant and later as Minister of Public Welfare and Minister of Health. The district files are quite valuable as they cover twenty successive - years of the development of one of the more remote areas of Newfoundland - the White Bay North (later Strait of Belle Isle) District - and provide a rich resource for - students of social and cultural history. The papers relating to Roberts' years as leader of the Liberal Party also complement Smallwood's, as Roberts succeeded - Smallwood as leader. - COLL-078

The collection includes two family photographs, several permits, programs from functions attended by Ritcey, two hymn booklets, a letter regarding the donation of two Ritcey family bibles to the Queen Elizabeth II Library (Memorial University of Newfoundland) and a copy of a poem. 139. Rideout, Tom Rideout, Tom The Tom Rideout political papers are a record of the political career of Thomas Gerald Rideout. Covering the - years 1974-1991, they are mostly political in nature, consisting of correspondence, memos, reports, briefing notes, meeting - minutes, etc. There is also material from his life outside of politics relating to personal matters, his family, to some aspects of - business dealings and to his home area of Baie Verte. Generically, these are mainly textual documents, but there are also - photographs, building blueprints, newspaper clippings, and ephemera. - - The papers represent a fairly complete picture of Rideout's career as a Member of the House of Assembly and Cabinet - Minister, particularly after his move from the Liberal party to join the Progressive Conservatives in 1980. Some material also - relates directly to his brief term as the Premier of the province (22 March - 3 May, 1989). They will be of interest to historians - of Newfoundland and Newfoundland and Labrador politics and political systems. - - One large series relates to Rideout's activities and campaigns within his district. Another documents his activities with - various departments and government branches. A third reflects personal and special interests, ranging from annual - speeches made at high school graduations to his involvement with Meech Lake. A major portion of this collection consists - of correspondence: with his constituents; with other citizens across the province; with organizations and special interests; - with business leaders and trade unions; and with other politicians at both the provincial and national levels. Together, the - papers are a major source of primary material on the political activities of one politician, and provide insight into the - practices and procedures of Newfoundland and Labrador politics in the closing decades of the Twentieth Century.
