Wornell, Abe
Businessman; politician; writer; community worker; the papers of A.C. Wornell provide insight into the life of a man who made substantial contributions to major facets of Newfoundland life. There is little from his business career but there is ample material to illustrate his involvement in the other areas cited. - He was a member of the House of Assembly during the last five years of the Smallwood premiership and an active participant in the 1969 Liberal Party Leadership Convention. He has written in a number of genre, capturing history, culture, tradition, commenting on politics, religion and social issues. - He was a member of the Methodist College Literary Institute during a period which saw that organization celebrate its centenary and adapt to changing times. - There are also journals and diaries from his father's years as a magistrate on the coast of Labrador including during the Spanish flu epidemic in 1919. This is a collection which requires careful scrutiny by researchers for them to realize its potential value to their work. -

Wood, Thomas Martin, 1807-1881; Portraits; Pencil drawing
Pencil drawing of Rev. Thomas M. Wood by an unknown artist. The note on the back indicates that it may have been commissioned as a gift by Rev. Benjamin Smith for Wood in the 1840s. As both men were resident in Newfoundland in that decade, it is possible that the drawing was done in Newfoundland. The drawing shows Wood from the waist up, seated in a chair, and in clerical robes and collar.
