The Aid to New Newfoundlanders '79 papers consist of the correspondence, minutes of meetings and newsletters of a private group which was formed in August 1979 in St. John's to sponsor a family of Southeast Asian refugees into Canada. The papers chronicle the preparations for the arrival of the family, their schooling and employment and eventual departure to live in Toronto in the fall of 1980.

This fonds consists of a hand-bound booklet containing the published A.R.P. Note Book issued by the Director of Civil Defence, St. John's, Newfoundland, February, 1942, which gives the "functions and duties of an air raid warden," as well as blackout regulations and emergency procedures. Additional typed pages contain location and contact information for the air raid zones in St. John's.

Ten oversized photographs from the display on the history of American military activities in Newfoundland as part of Soiree 88 celebrating 100 years of municipal government in St. John's. Established in 1941 with the arrival of the American military in Newfoundland, Post No. 9 has survived the closure of the bases through the loyalty and determination of a few of its members.

Anderson, Hugh Abercrombie
This is a very small amount of material related to the career of Hugh Abercrombie Anderson, a Newfoundlander who spent most of his working life in New York City. It includes - the dust jacket to Anderson's biography of his brother, John Murray Anderson, a prominent Broadway - producer in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s; a review of the biography by Sylvia Wigh, which appeared in a - St. John's newspaper; a newspaper report on Hugh Anderson's visit to St. John's in 1955; a clipping - showing him addressing the St. John's Rotary Club; and two newspaper accounts of his death in 1965. - The information contained in this material is mainly biographical. - In June 1995 the Archives acquired the original document awarding Anderson membership in the Military - Division of the Order of the British Empire. At the same time, a newspaper clipping of a column written by - the Wayfarer in the St John newspaper, The Daily News, was found in a box of miscellaneous clippings - which were part of the bequest to Memorial University of Joseph R. Smallwood. The clipping contained - information on the Anderson family and a reprint of a poem by Hugh Anderson, "Damming the Belle Isle - Straits", which he sent to the newspaper. It has been photocopied for preservation reasons and added to - this collection. - Gilbert Higgins was given a typescript of Anderson's play "The Mermaid Tavern" by Anderson many years - ago. In July 1996 he presented that copy to the Archives.

Anderson, John Murray
This collection contains a very miniscule representation of the work of John Murray Anderson, the - Newfoundland-born, New York-based producer and writer of stage musicals and director of motion - pictures: the words and music to the song How High the Moon and the program for a production of - Thumbs Up! - In June 1995 the Archives was able to acquire a second, equally small, amount of material related to John - Murray Anderson. It includes several autographed postcards and the syllabus for his theatre school for - 1927-1928. There were three letters addressed to Anderson's father, two of which concern Anderson's - hobby: autograph collecting.

This collection consists of a travel diary written by Frederick Attenborough in the summer of 1935. Attenborough records this journey, which starts on Monday, July 29, at Barrow-in-Furness, England in great detail. His first destinations are Edinburgh and Liverpool. His holiday then takes him by ship to parts of Newfoundland and Canada.
