The Victorian Triumph (1898) is the second volume of poetry by Isabella Whiteford. Since the publication of her first volume entitled Poems (1860), she had become a well-known literary figure in the colony, marrying James Johnstone Rogerson in 1879. Victorian Triumph contains 101 poems which, like her previous collection, focus on such topics as nature, the passage of time, historical and local community events, and religious themes. Many poems draw on her philanthropical work, which she shared with her husband as an active member of the Methodist Church. (G.M. Story, "Whiteford, Isabella (Rogerson)," Dictionary of Canadian Biography, vol. 13.)
3.
The convict ship and other poems
Poetry; Newfoundland and Labrador--Poetry
Includes the long poem "The convict ship" and 90 other poems. Death and loss are recurring themes, and many references are made throughout to her native Scotland. Religious themes are also present, notably in a selection of poems dealing with Scriptural heroines. Peace also writes about local events, such as the St. John's fire of 1846. There are tributary lines at the end by fellow poet E. Marks, and a poetic exchange between the two authors about Scotland (p. 156-65).
4.
Poems, written in Newfoundland
Poetry; Newfoundland and Labrador--Poetry
Henrietta Lushington, nee Prescott, was the daughter of Sir Henry Prescott, Governor of Newfoundland from 1834-41. The collection includes several long poems as well as miscellaneous items and poetry for youth. Though written in Newfoundland, the island as a subject is not predominant, Lushington drawing on nature and world history for inspiration.
5.
Poems
Poetry; Newfoundland and Labrador--Poetry
Poems (1860) is the first volume of poetry by Isabella Whiteford, whose Methodist parents immigrated to Newfoundland in 1850. Poems contains some 120 pieces, many Christian-themed and covering both Newfoundland and Irish subjects. In addition to traditional topics such as nature and the passage of time, Whiteford also drew inspiration from historical and local community events, such as Wolfe's victory at Quebec, the loss of a sailor at sea, and parish fundraising efforts. (G.M. Story, "Whiteford, Isabella (Rogerson)," Dictionary of Canadian Biography, vol. 13.)
