A short biography of Rev. Oliver Jackson (1887-1937), a Welshman who served with the Methodist / United Churches in Newfoundland. He held positions in Brigus, Freshwater and Bell Island, and was known as a social reformer. In 1931 Jackson was appointed superintendent of United Church missions in Newfoundland, traveling extensively throughout the island until his death by drowning in 1937.

An extensive collection of ballads and sea songs gathered in Newfoundland by Elizabeth Greenleaf, began when she spent a year teaching with Sir Wilfred Grenfell's mission in on the Northwest coast of Newfoundland. Greenleaf returned the following summer to continue her task, and once again some time later with Grace Yarrow Mansfield on a folklore expedition from Vassar College to Newfoundland.

This biography of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre focuses on his life, works, and his love of nature. Roule explains that Saint-Pierre was a writer whose works were greatly influenced by his early travels, which instilled in him passions for religion, morality, botany, and nature. He was a firm believer that humanity needed to be more in tune with nature in order for the world to find balance, and was both a supporter and practitioner of vegetarianism.

First edition -- Presents the stories of fifteen missionaries at work in as many different places. Chapter 15 (p. 100-109) covers Sir Wilfred Grenfell, who as a young doctor was sent to Labrador by The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen on the hospital ship "Albert" to serve the needs of people who had previously had access to a doctor only during the summer months. Bob Bartlett was an accomplished sea captain and artic explorer born in Brigus, Newfoundland in 1875 and was a sickly child until his father sent him to sea to fish. This not only made Bartlett a strong healthy young man, but it also instilled in him a lifelong love of the sea. This book highlights the Arctic expeditions Bartlett undertook with fellow explorer Robert Peary as well as many of his other adventures.
