In writing these letters, leading Irish Catholic politician and merchant Patrick Morris had as his goal "to draw the attention of Her Majesty's Government to the anomalous position in which the British Fisheries of Newfoundland are placed, by the competition of foreigners, and likewise to the unaccountable, and in his opinion unwise and impolitic neglect of the settlement and colonization" of the island (p. [iii]). The three letters brought together here in an 1847 brochure provide Morris' views on Newfoundland's history to 1832 (p.[1]-15), the fisheries (p.[16]-46], and colonization (p. [47]-136).

Reverend Anspach, an Anglican clergyman, served as a justice of the peace in Conception Bay from 1803-1812. This Summary was the result of a desire to acquaint himself fully with the law of the land and prepare a reference work for his fellow magistrates (Introduction).

"We glided into a harbor which wound like a river between jagged precipices, and then the Bruce reached her wharf [...] a twenty minutes' walk along a rugged path, much of it the exposed surface of solid rock, brought us to Channel, a typical fishing village, like which there are scores along the deeply indented coast of Newfoundland" (p. 5). Branch tells of her visit to Channel, now part of Port aux Basques, and of the people she met there.

An account of Mina Hubbard's journey across Labrador as she attempted to complete the failed 1903 expedition of her husband, Leonidas Hubbard. Using her husband's guide, George Elson, Mina began her own expedition in 1905, finishing in record time. She created the first accurate map of Labrador rivers. -- Includes journal of Leonidas Hubbard which was kept during his Labrador expedition (p. 205-254), and a narrative by George Elson (p. 255-305).

Volume 1 of 3. This book focuses on the topography, native peoples, agriculture, history of the formation of, and a general description of British America. Newfoundland is only mentioned briefly in this volume; in chapter one Newfoundland is referred to as forming a part of the boundary of British America (p. 18, 20), and in chapter three the author describes how Newfoundland changed hands between the British and the French (p. 154), including the details of the Treaty of Utrecht (p. 167).

Newfoundland is discussed in relation to the other maritime provinces in several chapters, while chapter twelve is devoted wholly to Newfoundland and Labrador's history, industry, and commercial, social, and political states. -- Frontispiece is a vignette of St. John's, Newfoundland.

Volume 3 of 3. This book describes the history of the Hudson's Bay Company in British America, as well as emigration to the colonies. Newfoundland was regarded as a good place to emigrate for those who were "able seamen", but was distinctly unsuitable for farmers (p. 181). The botany, geology, and zoology of Newfoundland are also found in the respective chapters on these subjects.
