A biography of William Gilbert Gosling, by his wife Armine Nutting Gosling. "With a foreword by the Right Rev. Arthur Heber Browne, Lord Bishop of Bermuda". -- Arriving in St. John's from Bermuda in 1881, Gosling was active in business, history, and municipal politics. Highlights of his life include his participation in the Newfoundland Board of Trade; his publications on Labrador and Sir Humphrey Gilbert; and his tenure as Mayor of St. John's. Reverend Browne first traveled to Labrador in 1890, and describes his book as "a little literary fabric woven from facts and experiences, during the leisure moments of a busy ministerial life" (p. viii). Thematic chapters examine Labrador's history and the various peoples who reside there, and include such topics as shipwrecks, the fisheries, the Moravian Missions and the Inuit.

An autobiographical account of the life of Captain Morris Barnes. Captain Barnes was born into a middle-class merchant family in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1850. The family owned a fleet of ships, allowing Barnes to go to sea for the first time at 11 years of age. Anecdotal in nature, this book by Barnes tells the tale of many of his adventures both at sea and on land.

An autobiographical account of the life of J. J. Jusserand, a French author and diplomat. As a diplomat, Jusserand worked for France mainly in England and the United States, but also in Tunisia and Denmark. References to Newfoundland can be found throughout the book, but a more detailed discussion of the Newfoundland Question and Jusserand's role in negotiations occurs on p. 108-113. At the time the French Question came to a head, Jusserand was consul in London and was instructed to mediate with Secretary of State Sir Thomas Sanderson on the catching of lobsters by both the French and British off the French shore of Newfoundland.

Wandering thoughts, or solitary hours

Tocque wrote Wandering Thoughts while residing on the northern coast of Newfoundland, and mingled his own observations with material drawn from other writers. Covering a myriad of subjects he is in turn a naturalist, historian and teacher of science. Tocque's purpose was "to afford instruction and entertainment to the youth of his native country, Newfoundland, and more especially to those classes whose means of information are somewhat limited, viz. the young fisherman and mechanic" (Preface).

This extract (p. 109-161) from a larger work includes the portion dealing with the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and Saint Pierre only; Cassini did not land in Newfoundland and only provides descriptions of the coast and the waters around it, as well as of the banks. Cassini also describes the French fisheries, both on ship in the Grand Banks (p. 116-125) and on shore at Saint Pierre (p. 145-153).
