Joseph Jukes, an English geologist, was appointed surveyor for Newfoundland in 1839 and spent 16 months in the colony. In Excursions, Jukes describes his travels around the island, including tales of the seal hunt, the people and customs he encountered, and observations on Newfoundland's natural history and physical geography. He found Newfoundlanders to be "[a] simple, honest, industrious, good-natured and hospitable people, and [to] have the virtues of all hardy races exposed to the toils and dangers of an adventurous life" (vol. 1, p. 238).Volume one includes details of Jukes' excursions from his arrival in St. John's in April 1839 to April 1840.

Included in the exhibition are English landscapes and works created from Toft's expedition to Newfoundland. Toft was the guest of Lord Rothmere, who was instrumental in the creation of several paper mills in Newfoundland, and so the dominating subjects of Toft's Newfoundland pieces are the paper mills and surrounding landscapes.

Politicians--Newfoundland and Labrador; Public relations and politics; Newfoundland and Labrador--Politics and government--1855-1934 Having retired from politics following his defeat in 1897, former leader of the Liberal Party Sir William Whiteway wrote to the Free Press stating he would be returning to politics. Whiteway first rose to power by way of his insistence that Newfoundland should have a railway crossing the entire island; the railway deal was to later play a large role in his losing power. In this document Whiteway explains his position, and refutes accusations made by the current government on several issues, including the railway, the details of his retirement from politics, and letters of support supposedly written by him for politicians he did not endorse.

Father and son : a study of two temperments Father and son : a study of two temperments Gosse, Edmund, 1849-1928 Gosse, Edmund, 1849-1928--Childhood and youth; Gosse, Philip Henry, 1810-1888; Authors, English--19th century--Family relationships; Authors, English--19th century--Biography; Plymouth Brethern--England--Biography; Zoologists--Great Britain--Biography; Fathers and sons--England; Apostasy; England--Social life and customs--19th century This book is an autobiographical account of the childhood of Edmund Gosse, and a biographical account of his father, Philip Henry Gosse, who had come to Newfoundland to work as a clerk, and then became so fascinated with entomology during his time on the island he taught himself how to properly study insects. A key literary and intellectual figure in 19th century England, as a child Edmund was not permitted to read literature, as it was looked upon as sinful by his devoutly religious parents. His gradual exposure to poetry and other forms of literature resulted in his eventual loss of faith, which proved devastating to Edmund's father, Philip, an active member of the Plymouth Brethren. Philip's devotion to religion propelled him to publish a book countering Darwin's Theory of Evolution with his own theory that attempted to integrate evolution and creationism. The failure of this book caused Philip to focus increasingly on his faith, which was the catalyst for the rift between the two men.

Also included are explanations of issues facing the department and those it serves, as well as remedies sought to reduce them, letters submitted to the director by those working in the Division, and the Division's financial statement. The report of the judge of the St. John's Juvenile Court includes statistics of those who appeared before the Court, the financial statement, and letters submitted to the director pertaining to the operation of the Juvenile Court system.

His work provides information on the people, society, the fisheries, Labrador, Aboriginal Peoples and hunting; during his return voyage, he also recorded observations on the city of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia (p. 148-56).
