The crown colonies and their history The crown colonies and their history Clark, Cumberland, 1862- Great Britain--Colonies In writing this book, Clark's intention was to educate the British people about Britain's colonies, which were quite numerous at the time of publication. Clark wished to highlight the import role the colonies played in making Britain a world economic power, and to teach readers about the history of the colonies as well. Newfoundland and Labrador are discussed in chapter two (p. 40-48), with Clark explaining how Newfoundland was the oldest colony, the importance of the rich Newfoundland fishery to Britain, and the French Shore Question. Clark also corrects popular misconceptions about the colony, and provides information about Newfoundland and Labrador's economy, climate, and physical geography.

The problems listed include wastage and antiquated fishing methods, while the solutions given include improvements to fishing equipment, methods, and marketing. Also included are biographies of important public figures, many of whom were influential in the sealing industry, politics, or religion.

(James Brendan), 1868-1957 Fishers--Massachusetts--Gloucester; Seafaring life Gloucestermen are fishermen from Gloucester, Massachusetts, who are well known for being superior and hardy fishermen; this book contains a collection of stories which were both told to the author or were a part of his personal experiences at sea with these men. References to Newfoundland are found throughout the book, as Gloucestermen fished on Georges Bank, and many of them spent time fishing on the Grand Banks as well.

(William Eppes), 1796-1868 Newfoundland and Labrador--Description and travel; Beothuk Indians; Natural history--Newfoundland and Labrador; Centenary issue. -- Being from St. John's, William Cormack decided in 1822 to become better acquainted with Newfoundland's interior by walking across the island. While on his journey, he noted the rocks, minerals, flora, and fauna he encountered; those notes were then published in the Edinburgh Philosophical Journal in 1824. This Centenary issue was created for use in Newfoundland schools at the request of the education authorities of Newfoundland.

In this pastoral, he provides his new parishioners with a summary of his plans, including for the distribution of collection money, and instructs them on several matters of proper religious practice. The appendix includes prayers for different people and occasions.

M. Jackson, Oliver, 1887-1937; United Church of Canada--Newfoundland and Labrador--History; United Church of Canada--Clergy A short biography of Rev. Oliver Jackson (1887-1937), a Welshman who served with the Methodist / United Churches in Newfoundland. He held positions in Brigus, Freshwater and Bell Island, and was known as a social reformer. In 1931 Jackson was appointed superintendent of United Church missions in Newfoundland, traveling extensively throughout the island until his death by drowning in 1937.
