MESSAGE F R OM T H E PRESIDENT
For the past five conventions it has been my privilege and pleasure
to extend a warm and cordial welcome to the delegates, and
again this year to those who have gathered in Comer Brook, to
participate in the 40th Annual Convention of the Newfoundland
and Labrador 50 + Federation.
It will be almost six years since my election as President of the Federation, and the
organization has grown to 137 clubs with membership of over 6650, which is the
highest number since 1974.
The Newfoundland and Labrador 50 + Federation would like to welcome the
following new Clubs: Active Living for Older Adults, Roberts Arm, Beaches 50 +
Club, Eastport, Brighton 50 + Club, Brighton, Random East Seniors, Britannia,
South Brook 50 + Club, South Brook, Trout River 50 + Club, Trout River, , and
Black Duck 50 + Club, Black Duck.
After years of lobbying for changes and improvements, such as the appointment of
a Minister for Seniors, introduction of province wide 911 service, the streamlining
of the application process for organization grants, the improvement of mobility
impaired parking spots through out the province and government plan for expansion
of long term care beds all of which have been implemented since our last convention.
I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Newfoundland and Labrador
50 + Federation, to congratulate the Placentia Area Chamber of Commerce on their
initiative to organize an Age Friendly Fair for the Placentia area, again this year. Last
year 1 had the pleasure of attending this event and was impressed by the presentations
and the many exhibitors who played a major part in this Fair. The Federation was
pleased to partner with the Chamber of Commerce this year, and had an exhibit that
was well received by the people who attended this event.
It is noted that the participants at the Premier's Summit on Health Care held January
14, 2015, expressed a need for an increased awareness of disease prevention and
health promotion services. Age Friendly Fairs are a way in which an increased
awareness can be accomplished. The Federation encourages clubs to promote Age
Friendly Fairs in their area.
The Federation is very excited to partner with the Seniors Resource Centre of
Newfoundland and Labrador through an Age Friendly Crant from the Department
of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development. This grant will allow us to go to 20
communities to talk about what the Seniors Resource Centre does to promote, support
and enhance the independence and well-being of older adults in the province.
Our Newsletters play an important part in our communication of information to
our members and are available to be viewed on the Seniors Resource Centre of
2
Newfoundland and Labrador website: http://www.seniorsresource.ca/publications.php.
This year our Secretary, David Fowlow, Area Director, Edward Combden and Area
Director, Joan Bowen will not be seeking re-election in their positions. The Federation
would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their years of volunteer service
to the seniors of the province and wish them success in their future endeavours.
Again this year we would like to sincerely thank our major sponsors Roebothan -
McKay - Marshall, Personal Injury Lawyers, St. John's, NL and The Oram Group of
Companies, Glovertown, NL, our 50 + Clubs and Lions Clubs in District N-3 & N-4
for their financial donations towards the 40th Annual Convention.
On behalf of my wife, I would like to thank many of the 50 + Clubs across the
province for their hospitality shown to us on our visits throughout the year.
I personally would like to take this opportunity again to thank all board members
and clubs for their support and confidence in my leadership during the past years.

MESSAGE F R OM T H E 1ST V I C E PRESIDENT
Welcome to the 40th Annual Convention of the Newfoundland and Labrador 50
+ Federation. It is so nice to be on the beautiful west coast this year.
It has once again been a busy year. This was my first year as 1 st Vice President
and I have enjoyed it very much. I have attended Board Meetings and have played
a very active role on the Board. I also acted as President whenever needed. At our
President's request, I acted as a liaison with the Area Directors and I put a lot of
time and energy into this role. I was also part of the Organizing Committee for
this year's Convention. I continued my work on the Provincial Advisory Council
on Aging and Seniors. As part of that role, I was delighted to be selected to serve
on a Committee which determined the recipients of the Seniors of Distinction
awards. This was a very rewarding experience. I was also re-elected as President
of the Bumside 50 + Club.
I am very happy with the direction in which our Federation is going. Many new
clubs have been established and this adds to the great energy that is very evident.
I wish each and every one of you an awesome convention. I look forward to
seeing old friends and making new ones. Have lots of fun, relax and remember.
it's all good!

partnered with the Marystown Lions Club and were very fortunate to
obtain a $15,000.00 grant to do major repairs to our club.
Thank you for your support and I look forward to serving you for another
year.

MESSAGE FROM T H E TREASURER
I am in my final year of term three as Treasurer of the 50 + Federation. There has
been tremendous growth in the Federation over these years with an increase in
member clubs and individual memberships.
Also, a number of policies were adopted over my term of office that was of
significant benefit to individual clubs. The policy of sharing lottery proceeds was
benefited by close to one hundred percent of the registered clubs. Also, GST/
HST rebates was significant benefit to those clubs that took advantage. Close
to S 150,000 has been distributed to various clubs since the policy was adopted.
The audited financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2014 shows
the Federation to be in a sound financial position with no significant liabilities.
Have a good convention

Avalon North
I am pleased to write this report from the Avalon North area. Last fall, 2014,
I took part in the activities of the "October 1 st International Day of the Older
Person". The club in my hometown of Winterton held a walkathon and a day of
activities for seniors and others in the town and surrounding area. I encourage
all clubs throughout the province to celebrate that "special day" again this year.
Other events of interest that I attended were the two "Seniors Expos". One was
held in November 2014 at the Manuels River Interpretation Centre and the other
one in Placentia on June 12th and 13th, 2015.
All the visits to the different clubs have taken place, and it is a pleasure to
witness the benefits of a 50 + club. Continue to be active in your community so
that others will hopefully be eager to get involved.
Many thanks to all the club members throughout the area for always making my
visit a pleasurable one.
Keep well!

Warm welcome to our 40th Annual Convention
As I come to the end of my third term as your Area Director, I sincerely thank

This past year I visited the following 50 + clubs in Freshwater, Dunville , Fox

had planned to visit but had to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances in our
family I apologize.
I served as a member on Age Friendly Advisory Committee for the third

by The Placentia Chamber of Commerce. Our President Robert Rogers brought

Terra Nova - Bonavista
Welcome everyone to our 40th Annual Convention.
This year Area 4 has increased from 15 to 17 clubs. We are happy to
welcome the Beaches 50 + Club from Eastport and the Random East
Seniors Club which includes several communities. Also, a number of
individuals from Musgrave Harbour have expressed an interest in forming
a club. We will pursue this later in the Fall.
I have visited the majority of clubs in my area, some of them on several
occasions. Those clubs where a visit could not be arranged, I did speak to
the President or other executive member to see how their clubs were doing.
Most clubs in Area 4 are active and doing very well. A few clubs have
had executive members' ill, which prevented them from holding meetings
regularly. However, they are hopeful they will get back to their regular
routine as soon as possible. We wish them well.
I would like to thank the clubs I visited for their hospitalities. It has been
a very enjoyable year for me.
I sincerely hope you enjoy the convention here in Comer Brook this year.

familiar faces and discuss events with different clubs.
As this is the end of my two year term as Director Area 5 ,1 would like to
thank the clubs that I visited. I will not be seeking the position of Director
but it has been a pleasure and experience working with the Executive of the

REPORT F R OM D I R E C T O R AREA 6
Grand Falls - Connaigre Peninsula
Greeting from Central Newfoundland.
My first year serving as an Area Director was very successful. There are 16 clubs
in my area. I have visited all of these clubs at least once, except for St. Alban's,
Conne River, Hr. Breton and Leading Tickles. I am hoping to visit these clubs
in early fall. I have been in contact with all the Club Presidents to discuss grant
applications and other matters.
My first visit was to Buchans to complete the opening of a new Senior's Club,
with the assistance of Rose Wilson. I was also able to open new Clubs in Roberts
Arm, Brighton, and South Brook with the assistance of President Robert Rogers,
who was accompanied by his charming wife, Lillian. I am hoping to open a new
club in Pilley's Island in the near future.
I am asking all Clubs in my area to invite me to their election of officers and
their swearing in ceremonies. I very much enjoyed the Christmas parties that my
husband and I attended at Buchans, Grand Falls, Botwood and Windsor.
I express my warm gratitude for the reception I received at the meetings held
in Buchans, Hertimage, Botwood, Bishop's Falls, South Brook, Brighton,
Belleoram, Windsor, Point Leamington and Milltown (Thanks, Ruth Priddle for
the home cooked meals at your home).
My husband, Renard has supported me and accompanied me on all my travels.
I wish everyone a very enjoyable convention and safe travels home.

REPORT FROM DIRECTOR AREA 7
Northern Peninsula
Hello everyone, its hard to believe that another busy year has gone by already.
I have continued to make people in Area 7, the Northern Peninsula, aware of the
NL 50 + Federation and the importance that it plays in the lives of seniors. As I
travel from town to town I am amazed at how many people were unaware of us
and what we are all about. I have met many seniors who want to be out, about
and active but just never had a place to go to interact with one another. Setting up
meetings in towns in my area has produced some awesome results. Many people
have stepped up to the plate and have taken on the responsibilities of forming
new clubs with me, and while others have taken on leadership roles in existing
clubs, and to all of them I give my heartfelt thanks.
At this time I would like to welcome two new clubs in my area, the Trout River
50 + Club and the St. Barbe, Forresters Point, Pigeon Cove and Black Duck
Cove Club known as the Black Duck 50 + to the Federation. This brings the total
number of clubs in Area 7 up to 23, 9 of which have been formed since I have
become Area 7 Director in the past two years.
Not only have there been new clubs formed but the existing clubs have been
extremely busy. To name a few activities the Norris Point Gros Mome Seniors 50
+ Club have started walking on Wednesdays and then they play cards afterwards.
The Deer Lake Seniors 50 + Club have a fun night on Tuesdays where everyone
comes out to play cards, darts, music etc. or just sit around to chat. The Woody
Point Funtastics 55 + Club have put on a concerts for the town. Pollards Point,
Sops Arm and Jacksons Arm Fvening Breeze 50 + Club hosted Fogo Island and a
good time was had by all. Rocky Hr Pioneers' 50 + Club had a Chri.stmas Dinner
with resident James Shears and other members cooking, and trust me they are great
cooks. Cormack plays cards twice a week and Reidville has had classes on knitting
where experienced knitters help the less experience. Bellbums 50 + Club has been
busy updating and obtaining equipment for their new club, and the list goes on.
Fight of our clubs have received the New Horizon grants as well as two town
councils have received grants to support the newly formed clubs in their town.
These grants have been put to great use in supporting seniors and their activities.
The clubs in Area 7 are active and lively. I continue to be amazed by the energy
levels people have when they are socializing, which only goes to show the affects
of being out, about and active and the importance of the NL 50 + Federation.
I hope you all enjoy the Convention.

Greetings and Welcome to the West Coast for the 2015 Annual Newfoundland and

I've been your Area Director for the past six years. An experience for sure, but also
exciting, meeting old and new friends. Seeing some great improvements and the
time-less hours you have spent, making sure seniors in your community are kept
busy and active, in community affairs.
There are 18 Clubs in this area but geographical spread and this past year due to
weather conditions I did not get to visit some of you.
As this is my last year as your Area Director, I would like to thank all clubs for your
kind hospitality and warm welcome. It's been a pleasure and I am sure your new

A sincere welcome to all attending our 40th Annual Convention of the Newfoundland
and Labrador 50+ Federation, convening on the beautiful west coast of our province
this year. We are planning a great convention to mark this milestone year for our
Federation and hope to see a bumper crowd. I extend these greetings on behalf of
our six, 50 +Clubs operating in Labrador along with myself as Director for Labrador.
We have not added any new clubs from Labrador this year but the six in operation
are doing great work to keep their members interested and informed about important
information available to seniors. All clubs now have great facilities for all their activities
and meetings. It has been a very busy year for all but also a very interesting one.
I have enjoyed my year serving on the Federation for Labrador and look forward
to another great convention especially since it will be in Comer Brook. It is a great
honor to serve the Federation as we celebrate forty years of being an advocate for the
seniors of this province.

I would like to extend a very warm welcome to delegates of the Newfoundland and Labrador 50+
Federation on tfie celebration of your 40"^ Annual Convention.
The ongoing work and advocacy to protect senior rights is an incredible task, but I know you are up
tor the job, as has been proven. It is through the work of local organizations and clubs that makes the
ditterence in those lives of the aging population. The coming together of these local clubs at a
convention is an important step to sharing the successes of the work being done and the advocacy
that is needed to continue working on the ongoing issues that still need attention.
I trust you will have a wonderful visit in the West Coast City of Corner Brook and that your convention
meets with great success and productivity. Thank you tor your dedication and sense of caring tor
issues that are important to our seniors, and their comfort and quality of lite.

On behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, I extend a warm welcome
to organizers and participants to the 40th Annual Convention of the Newfoundland and
Labrador 50+ Federation.
We have accomplished much in recent years, but we recognize that we can, and must,
do more for this growing segment of society. Our government has introduced and
supported many initiatives of benefit to seniors in recent years - everything from tax
initiatives (such as the Low-Income Seniors Tax Benefit), to fee reductions, programs
for caregivers, provincial wellness grants, age-friendly projects, seniors' recreation
programs, inclusion and accessibility grants, seniors' housing and long-term care
facilities.
In 2014,1 was pleased to announce that we were taking another step forward with
the creation of the Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development. This
enhanced focus on seniors is designed to continue to build on our successes to date,
and to chart a path forward that helps to ensure older adults can remain healthy,
active, engaged citizens.
The work of the 50+ clubs clearly aligns without our government's goal to allow people
to continue to enjoy active, healthy, meaningful lives in their own communities while
building strong networks throughout the province.
Thank you to the many volunteers of 50+ clubs who give generously of their time.
Your work helps make Newfoundland and Labrador communities more vibrant and
stimulating for people of all ages.
Sincerely,
Honourable Paul Davis

Message from the Minister
Congratulations to the Newfoundland and Labrador
50+ Federation on your 40'" Annual Convention.
To have reached this milestone speaks to your
organization's continued importance and relevance
in our society - and that is perhaps more true today
than ever before.
We know that the capacity for older adults to live
active, healthy, engaged lives is directly related to
the overall well-being of our entire community, and
the Newfoundland and Labrador 50+ Federation
continues to provide important contributions toward
our shared efforts in this regard.
We also know that Newfoundland and Labrador has
the most rapidly aging population in Canada. That's why the Provincial Government
has a Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework to guide development of
legislation, policies, programs and services which impact older persons. It is based
on the principles of dignity, self-fulfillment, social inclusion, independence, safety
and security, and fairness. It also provides a long range vision and continues to be
responsive to the needs of today's older adults, while planning for the requirements
of tomorrow.
As a Provincial Government, we have achieved much in the past 12 years in terms of
initiatives designed to benefit older adults and seniors. As we move forward, we will
continue to support the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework by investing in its
key directions and initiatives which support seniors throughout Newfoundland and
Labrador.
We will also continue to listen to senior citizens, and their families, to determine what
their priorities are, and how we can further address the challenges we face together.
Sincerely,

Message from the Minister
As Minister of Health and Community Services, 1 extend
my genuine gratitude and admiration to ail members
of the Newfoundland and Labrador S0+ Federation for
your continued contributions in communities across
our province.
Our government remains committed to ensuring the
health and well-being of all residents in Newfoundland
and Labrador, and it is only through working together
with community organizations such as the S0+
Federation that we can expect to deliver on that
mandate.
We recognize that our province has a rapidly aging
population, in fact, we currently have the fastest aging
population in the country. As our demographic of older adults continues to expand, the
voice of the S0+ Federation remains crucial as we move forward.
We have come a long way toward addressing Issues facing this demographic in
recent years through a number of initiatives and supports, including a strategy for the
continued provision of high quality long-term care and the creation of the Department
of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development; however, our government recognizes
there is still much work to be done and we are focused on continuing along our path
to effective and sustainable supports for seniors and their families. We will benefit
from strong insights and advocacy on behalf of older adults as we evolve to meet new
expectations of our health care system, and indeed all other areas of government.
Thank you to all members of the 50+ Federation for lending your passion, dedication
and hard work for the benefit of others in your communities. Your actions have a very
real and positive impact on the daily lives of others and it is worthy of recognition and
praise.
Congratulations on your 40th Annual Convention and best wishes for an informative
and enjoyable convention.

SENIOR SONGS
We're a jolly bunch of women, and a jolly bunch of men.
They call us senior citizens, if we're three score and ten.
We never are down hearted, and we never will complain,
As the years go rolling on.
Chorus:
GLORY, GLORY, HALLELUJAH, GLORY, GLORY,
HALLELUJAH
GLORY, GLORY, HALLELUJAH, AS T H E YEARS GO
ROLLING ON.
We like to come and sit a while, and tell a joke or two.
And talk with one another, when the meeting is all through,
Shake hands with all the members, as the Lord would have us do.
As the years go rolling on.
If you're fifty years or over, and you don't know what to do.
Just join the fifty plus club, and they will welcome you.
There's lots of fun and laughter, and you never will feel blue.
As the years go rolling on.
Once more, once more we've met again, our friendships to renew.
Dear Savoir, lead us all the way, in what we say and do.
And when it's time for us to part, go with us day by day.
In joy and sorrow, life and death, be thou our strength and stay.
The love of God, with peace and joy, will each of us attend.
And guide our way through coming days, until we meet again.
Depart in peace and do God's will, walk ever in the light.
For Christ is with you evermore, to guard you day and night.

Newfoundland and Labrador 50 + Federation
40"' Annual Convention Resolutions
Resolution; # 1
Financial Coverage for Lens Implants
Whereas: MCP and the Provincial Drug Card coverage is currently
restricted to "hard lens" implant only following cataract
surgery.
And
Whereas: Opthomalogists often, for medical reasons, recommend the
implant of "soft lens".
And
Whereas: The practice of covering costs of implanting of one type of lens
and not the other represents an inconsistency in application of
programs available for pensioners and seniors.
And
Whereas: Absence of coverage for "soft lens" creates undue financial
hardship or inability to avail of optimum eye care for many
seniors and pensioners.
Therefore be it resolved: This Federation request our Govemment
to apply MCP and the Provincial Dmg Card coverage for soft lens if
recommended by an opthomalogist.
Submitted by: Golden Rainbow Seniors Club, Cox's Cove, NL
Resolution Committee: Acceptance recommended

Resolution; #2
Personal Care Homes Construction
Whereas: The Newfoundland and Labrador govemment has promoted
and subsidized the operation of senior personal care homes,
And
Whereas: It is understood that many of the residents of these homes are
there dictated by the resident's state of health.
And
Whereas: As a result of these placement many elderly couples who have
been together for 50 + years are forced to live apart in homes in
different locations throughout the province creating difficulties
and stress on the couples and their extended families.
Therefore he it resolved; That the Newfoundland and Labrador 50 +
Federation request our provincial govemment to make every effort to have
future senior personal care homes constructed to accommodate senior
couples who have differing levels of health care needs.
Submitted by: New Visions 50 + Club, Centreville - Wareham - Trinity, NL
Resolution Committee: Acceptance recommended

Resolution: #3
Shingles Vaccine
Whereas: We have MCP and Seniors' Drug Card coverage in this
province.
And
Whereas: There are restrictions on the drugs covered i.e. injections for
shingles.
And
Whereas: There appears to be a major increase in the number of seniors
contracting this virus.
And
Whereas: The cost associated with obtaining this injection prohibits
many seniors from receiving the benefits of this drug.
Therefore be it resolved: That the Newfoundland and Labrador 50 +
Federation request the Newfoundland and Labrador Covemment to add
coverage for the shingles vaccine injection to their current drug coverage.
Submitted by: New Visions 50 + Club, Centreville - Wareham - Trinity, NL
Resolution Committee: Acceptance recommended
30
Resolution; #4
Financial Assessments in Long Term Care
Whereas: People applying to long term care facilities in Newfoundland
and Labrador feel obliged to transfer liquid assets to family
and friends rather than use assets for the cost of long term care;
And
Whereas: Transfer of liquid assets places these adults at risk of financial
abuse;
And
Whereas: The provinces of Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon, New Brunswick and
Nova Scotia have revised their financial policy so that
individuals living in long term care facilities are assessed based
on "income only";
And
Whereas: Covemment has committed since 2012 under goal 5.1.3
of "Close to Home: A Strategy for Long-Term Care and
Community Support Services" to review the financial
assessment processes which would include a review of the
current liquid asset policies;
Therefore be it resolved: This Federation requests our provincial
Covemment to immediately complete a review of the financial assessment
processes and consider "income only" as the financial criteria for paying
to live in a long term care facility.
Submitted by the Resolution Committee: Acceptance recommended

about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement
An audit invotves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in

assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial stalements, whether due to fraud or
error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity's

susceptible to satisfactory audit verlficat'Kjn. Accordingly, verification of these revenues was limited to the
amounts recorded in the records of Newfoundland and Labrador Pensioners, Senior Cltizens/50+

fundraising revenue, excess of revenues over expenses, and cash flows from operations for the year
ended December 31, 2014, current assets and net assets as at January 1, 2014 and December 31. 2014

CLOSING PRAYER
Closing of a Senior Citizens Meeting
O Cod, Our Father, we ask that you will bless us,
as we leave this meeting. Help us to understand
The purpose of this Senior Citizens Croup.
Support the efforts that are made to
bring Senior Citizens
together in fellowship, and to serve one another.
Bless all the decisions that we have made
in this meeting
for the benefit of our fellowship.
Cive each one of us health, and strength,
to continue the work
and fellowship of our group,
as we depart this meeting.
Forgive any trespass, and we pray that you will
Keep us in your care, and bring us back again,
so that we may know you better through one another.
Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord.
AMEN

The Ode to Newfoundland
When sun-rays crown thy pine-clad hills.
And summer spreads her hand.
When silvern voices tune thy rills.
We love thee, smiling land.
We love thee, we love thee,
L We love thee, smiling land.
%
As loved our fathers, so we love.
Where once they stood we stand.
Their prayer we raise to heaven above,
God guard thee, Newfoundland,
God guard thee, God guard thee,
God guard thee, Newfoundland.
O Canada!
O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise.
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
Cod keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
