MESSAGE FROM
DON HOLLOWAY
President
Welcome Seniors!
This is our 27th Annual Convention. However, 27 years is a long way
back if you were 65 or more years old when you joined a club. You
would now be 92 years old or more today. If you were here for our 1st
Convention, welcome and Congratulations! Although the Federation
was incorporated in 1978, we actually began Annual Conventions in
1975.
From less than 100 delegates to our Annual Conventions, we have
grown to an average of 500 attendees. We only wish that every one of
our thousands of members could attend. What a blessing that would be.
Now that we have ended the discrimination that we used to impose, we
now encourage the baby boomers who are recently turning 50+ to join
us and learn how to live a full rich and frujtfullife by emulating the
vibrant lifestyles of the older members of our movement.
It has been some years since we held a Convention at St. John's, but
now we are glad to visit this city once agam. Other venues have been
Corner Brook, Stephenville, Marystown, Clarenville, Gander.
No matter how governments try to streamline the delivery of Medicare,
seruors remam focused on the true plight of our Medical Delivery system.
Waiting lists! it is not streamlining that will cure the current
angrush in the medical delivery system that is to graduate more and
more medical practitioners from our Medical Schools. The slow down in
Medical School output was a deliberate act imposed around 1993. Will
we ever find the will to increase the enrollment numbers of
Newfoundland and Labrador young people. Our sons and daughters
are willmg, bu t the bar has been set too high. Admission price, and
superior academic achievement, are the mam barriers. Let's find the
courage to fix this problem.
Enjoy your stay in St. John's. Shop 'till you drop. Have fun. And, above
all, HUG A SENIOR.

REPORT FROM
ALF SULLIVAN - D IRECTOR LINK A-I
I was my first time as an elected "Link" with the Federation of Seniors
and over the months since the last Convention, I tried to fill the role the
position offered. In my first year I must admit to not having done all
that should have been done in my Link area. No apologies though.
Most of the time I tried to do my best. It has been a particularly
interesting year. While the position of "Link Director" is new, it is not
new for me to volunteer my services in the Community.
The Clubs in my immediate Link area got most attention, and
throughout the year I did make more than one visit to those Clubs. My
visits were mostly of a social nature and often my being there was by
direct invitation.
Whenever there was an opportunity to speak at those meetings I tried
to emphasize our Mission. I count myself as an active member of our
own local Senior's Club. The Daffodil Seniors and 50+ Club, and our
members are mostly anxious and eager to take part in the social aspects
and activities. That, I find to be the sentiments and desires of the other
club members in my Link area.
All and every specific requests either from the club membership or from
individuals were directed to the qualified people that could give the
required help.
In the past months a lot of my time as a member of the planning
committee for the Fall Convention has kept me anchored in the St.
John's area.
I look forward to visiting as many Clubs as possible in the early fall and
the ones that were not contacted during the year will be first an my
agenda. Thanks to all who were so kind to me.
Alf Sullivan
REPORT FROM
JIM W ARREN - D IRECTOR LINK D-4
The past year has been fairly successful with visits to the 18 clubs in my
Link. At the beginning of the year, in addition to their regular business,
each club was asked to attempt to do four other things: (1) make an extra
effort to Recruit new member s; (2) each member to write the Minister of
Health, Ottawa, requesting New Horizon Grants be implemented (350-400
letters were sent) (3) Send stories, poems, recipes, etc., to The Senior Voice
(4) Send in Resolutions. Most Clubs did these things.
We were delighted with our visits to Senior Clubs at Burnside, Gambo
(Heritage Group), Hare Bay, Salvage and our home Club at Gander. In all
places the Election and Installation of Officers took place. Great visits were
also experienced at Eastport and Happy Adventure where we did the
Installation of Officers. We were pleased to have the 2nd Vice-President,
Theresa Greeley, visit with us the Clubs at Victoria Cove, Hare Bay and
Gambo (Heritage Group) where we were well received. Lumsden is doing
very good, as is the Club at Greenspond - great visits. Carmanville made a
comeback last year, and recently obtained two new members as did the
Club at Summerville. A great visit to Port Rexton recently, the Club showing
a slight increase in membership over last year. Port Rexton and
Summerville enjoyed a Rally last fall. The Senior Club at Glovertown North
provided an excellent meal for members and invited guests, as well as
entertainment for the evening. Senior Clubs at Glenwood, Indian Bay and
Dover are doing fairly well. The Club at Newtown has not been up to its
usual good work because the President (Peter Hall) have had surgery, medical
treatments and was not well, however he is now getting on great and
the Club will be active again by now. Unfortunately the Happy Gang Club
at Gambo ceased to operate because of a lack of members, but we are
happy to state that some members joined with the Heritage Seniors Group
at Gambo. We have seen during the year our clubs in action, and several are
doing well, however, we are concerned with the aging membership, the
problem of attracting new membership, high costs of telephone service,
electric rates, etc. I think the Federation should more vigorously address
these concerns. All Officers are to be commended for their dedication and
commitment to their members. A special thank you and appreciation from
Vernie and myself to all members for your support, interest, and friendliness,
and after the work is done, keeping us well fed. We look forward to
seeing you at the Convention in St. John's.
I would be remiss if I did not remind all Links that the National Federation
Convention will be held in Gander, September 17-20, 2003. Gander Seniors
50+ Club is busy preparing for it. Our Chair, Wayne Penney, has notified all
Link Directors encouraging clubs in their Link to participate. Your suggestions
and input would be appreciated. We hope to make this a first class
Convention.

EILEEN POWELL - DIRECTOR LINK F-5
This has been a busy year since we hosted the convention here in Comer
Brook 2001. I have been involved in so many projects for Seniors, that it is
difficult to know where to begin. I attended a Federation Meeting in St.
John's in September. Had meetings with Echo Club and the Western Health
Care, Seniors Wellness Committee of which I am a member. This committee
is ongoing from the IYOP. At present we are trying to get the "Say Go"
program on the road. This is to help Seniors improve their balance control
and prevent accidents.
Attended a luncheon at the Meadows Club and the re-opening of their
newly renovated headquarters which makes it more wheelchair accessible.
They launched "Builders of Eternity" an archival book containing photos
and biographers of past and present members. Two great achievements. My
congra tula tions.
In October, attended supper for Seniors at Pasadena Club with Mr. Robert
Mercer attending. Also attended a Forum at the Glynmill Inn on elderly
caring for physically and mentally challenged sons and daughters. "Age
Related Transitions". We discussed the great need for more home support
workers and the wonderful work the VON is doing, in training those care
givers. I was present at a meeting of the Elks club for the "Hearing
Impaired" and attended a work-shop for Diabetes in October at the
Glynmill Inn. The Elks Club invited me to install their new officers in
October. This was followed by a delicious supper and entertainment.
I travelled to Winnipeg in November to receive my National VON Award
for volunteer of the year for Eastern Canada. I felt very honored to received
an award for something I love to do. In December I attended a party for
Seniors, sponsored by the RNC. Another Seniors party was sponsored by
the Kinsmen. I attended a "Tree" Memorial Service at VON remembering
loved ones, also a party for clients. I also sponsored an evening of
entertainment and refreshments for volunteers, held at the Elks Club.
Travelled to St. John's for a meeting with Government Social Policy
Committee re-resolutions. Other members of the Federation also present. I
went to St. John's again in March for launching of Diabetes Wellness
Program. The Church at Meadows had a service for the three communities,
Summerside, Gillams and Meadows Seniors. The participants were all
Seniors as well.
I attended the Annual supper at the @anadian Legion for the 166 Regiment
members. Also installed @fficers at the new Seniors Glub at Black J:)uck
Siding. Membership has grown from 12 to 25.
The Seniors Clubs, under my Link have had outings, bus tours, installations
of officers, pot luck suppers, dances, card games, darts, bingo, exchange
visiting of different club groups and are keeping active and reasonably
healthy. Congratulations to Burgeo Seniors Puffin Club on their 10th
Anniversary.
I want to say "thank you" to all my Senior Club Members for their
achievements and unity during the past year. You have made it easier for
me. You are to be commended and I have enjoyed working with you. Keep
healthy and God Bless.

REPORT FROM
R EG ANDREWS
First I would like to welcome all delegates to this annual convention
and trust that you will have an enjoyable time. It is at gatherings like
this that members can come together, share information and resources
that will help benefit individual clubs through the coming years ahead.
This past year's activities as link director were somewhat curtailed
because of my illness. However, I did manage to visit a number of clubs
in my district and I hope to visit the remaining ones by years end.
Those I have visited have reported in some cases an increase in
membership, while others have reported a decline.
I participated in the election and installation of officers in most clubs. I
attended functions at the Freshwater Community Centre where the
Freshwater club hosted a dinner and dance for the seniors of Calvert
and Hillview clubs. A great time was had by all!
I arranged an information session with Mr. Kevin Murphy of Human
Resources Development Canada concerning security and financial
matters of interest for seniors. These sessions were held at Freshwater,
which encompassed seniors in the Placentia region, and also at Green's
Harbour, which encompassed seniors from that region, with the
members from Heart's Delight club also in attendance. We hope to meet
with all of the remaining clubs at a later date.
On behalf of my wile and myself, I would like to thank the clubs for the
opportunity you have given us and look forward to the convention at
St. John.' s.

G LADYS S NOW - D IRECTOR LINK 7
Link 7 is the largest link in the Federation are-wise. It stretches from
Trout River in the South to St. Anthony in the north, and contains all of
Labrador. Many, many kilometres of travel. I visited some of my groups
on the Northern Peninsula in the Fall of 2001. St. Anthony has a good
active group but cannot attract many new members. Plum Point or
Reefs Harbour had quite a tussel getting a new slate of officers until
several young ladies volunteered to help out and have succeeded in
keeping the group together. I was saddened to hear of the death of
Hubert Chambers who was a long time treasurer of that Club. Several
other members of the group have passed away as well.
Port Saunders is still meeting at the Lions Club and have a very
supportive group. I paid a short visit to Cow Head and Parsons Pond
but did not have an official visit. I expect to visit these Clubs during the
early fall of 2002.
I visited Lance Au Loup in September. A very small group meeting
room and all the needed facilities but no new members.
Labrador City and Wabush welcomed me in October and I had a very
pleasant visit with them. They have their own Club house and get a fair
amount of support from LO.C. and the town. A very active group.
I succeeded in forming a new Group at Happy Valley but they have had
a rough time getting it all together.
I visited Woody Point this summer and hope to visit my other groups
some time soon.
I had two knee replacement surgeries during the winter and spring and,
although it has been good for me and I think it will be successful, I have
to give up a lot of my traveling. The adjustment that your body has to
make to accept such operations is quite time consuming. It has been
worth the discomfort for me and I find the healing is taking place all the
time.

REPORT FROM
K ENNETH BUNGAY - D IRECfOR L INK C-3
Again this past year has been interesting and very busy.
It began with a rally in early spring held in Fortune with nine clubs
around the Loop attending. These rallies are very important to the clubs
in the Link. Not only do they give club members a chance to get
together and learn what is happening in other clubs but it is also great
entertainment. In addition, they serve as an opportunity to encourage
new membership.
Our thanks to the MHA in my Link, Minister Judy Foote, and also to
my wife Elsie for her commitment. Also thanks to the Lion's and their
wives for providing excellent meals and seeing that all seniors were
made welcome and happy.
All clubs in my Link have been visited and appear to be doing well in
spite of the fact we have a declining membership because of aging.
However, in my Link we can report an increase in the 50+. Elsie and I
enjoy working with all clubs. We are eager to accept new members and
will do everything we can to make them welcome and happy in
whichever club they are in.
Some of our many activities in the past year include regular business
meetings, card games, bowling and darts.
Best wishes for a successful convention to be held in St. John's October
8, 9 and 10 of 2002.

Thanks for the opportunity to extend greetings to the Newfoundland
and Labrador Pensioners, Senior Citizens and 50+ Federation, as you
hold your 27th Annual Convention in St. John's.
We recognize that seniors today stay more productive and active,
work longer, and live healthier than ever before and this has been a
blessing to us all. It also points to future challenges as more of our
population becomes seniors, We are committed to meeting those
challenges by providing the supports required to assist seniors in
staying healthy, active and independent.
The Newfoundland and Labrador we have today is the product of the
work, effort and ideals of those people who came before us - the
seniors of the province. We are obligated to make the same effort and
to pass on to our children. Through discharging this responsibility
we ensure that the cultural and social fabric of our province is
preserved.
I hope you have productive and memorable convention and that you
take the time to enjoy yourself in our capital city.

On The National Convention of
The Pensioners and Senior Citizens Federation
I wish to take this opportunity to welcome all delegates and guests to
Newfoundland and Labrador. As the host province for th is year's
national convention, I invite all of you to explore our wonderful
scenery, discover our rich history and experience our unique cultural
traditions and way of life.
This national convention provides an opportunity to discuss issues
of concern to seniors throughout the country. As a member of
government, I am aware of the many concerns facing seniors today.
Nationally, our population demographic continues to age. This trend
challenges both government and community organizations to work
together to meet public expectations and enhance quality of life. This
convention will afford seniors an opportunity to come together and
reflect upon these challenges.
I want to offer the Pensioners and Senior Citizens Federation my best
wishes for a successful and memorable national convention. I extend
to each of you a welcome and best wishes for an enjoyable stay in

We all have to do more to
make driving safer and keep
insurance affordable.
We have had a broad discussion of proposals
for auto insurance reform over the past year.
Government has already introduced
legislation to ban the use of handheld cell
phones by drivers and increase penalties for
impaired driving.
Walter Noel I will soon be recommending new initiatives
Minister to improve our automobile insurance system.
These changes should be passed by the House of Assembly
this fall.
Safe driving is essential to prevent injuries and control the
cost of accidents. We have to minimize claim costs in order
to keep auto insurance rates from rising unnecessarily.

- POSSIBILITIES -
When your dreams start to seem so impossible,
when roadblocks are all you can see,
look beyond all the problems that face you
and focus on possibilities.
Don't limit your thoughts to the present
or solutions you have learned from the past.
Remember to keep looking forwardyou
may find the answer at last.
It is you who determines your future;
how your journey through tomorrow will be.
To fill all your days with adventure,
dare to see what no one else dares to see.
So never let obstacles stop you
or keep you from doing your part.
Have faith that your dreams are all possible,
if you truly believe in your heart.
- Tom Krause -
KINDNESS CAN ACCOMPLISH MUCH
Those who vow to do good should not expect people to clear the stones from
their path on this account.
They must expect the contrary; that others will roll great boulders around
them.
Such obstacles can be overcome by the kind of strength gained in the very
struggle.
Those who merely resent obstacles will waste whatever force thelj have.
Three kinds of progress are significant for culture: progress in knowledge
and technology; progress in the socialization of man; progress in spiritualih
the last is the most important.
Just as the wave cannot exist by itself, but must always participate in the
swell of the ocean.
So we can always experience our lives by ourselves, but must always share
the experiencing of life that takes place around us.
Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt,
kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust and hostilihj to evaporate.
-By Albert Schweiter-
You may bring to your office, and put in a frame,
a motto as fine as its paint, but if you're a crook
when you're playing the game,
that motto won't make you a saint.
You can stick up the placards all over the wall,
but here is a word I announce:
It is not the motto that hangs on the wall,
but the motto you live, that counts.
If the motto says, "Smile," and you carry a frown:
"Do it now," and you linger and wait;
if the motto says "Help," and you trample men down;
if the motto says, "Love," and you hate-you
won't get away with the mottos you stall,
for truth will come forth with a bounce.
It is not the motto that hangs on the wall,
but the motto you live, that counts.
CHOICES
Some people sit - some people try.
Some people laugh - some people cry.
Some people will - some people won't
Some people do - some people don't.
Some people believe and develop a plan.
Some people doubt - never think that they can.
Some people face hurdles and give it their best.
Some people back down - when faced with a test.
Some people complain of their miserable lot.
Some people are thankful for all that they've got.
And when it's aU over - when it comes to an end
some people lose out and some people win.
We all have a choice - We all have a say.
We are spectators in life, or we get in and play.
Whatever we choose - how we handle life's game,
The choices are ours - no one else is to blame.
