Message from the President
I n thi year of the Veteran, let me welcome
you to Grand Fall -Wmd or to the 30th
Annual General Meeting of thi Federation.
Welcome.
CoincidentaUy thi year marks the lOOth
year of the founding of the great paper
industry which helped thi province to grow
and pro per. Tru opened up the interior of
our province to trade and commerce. Other
than the Beothic who traveUed the now caUed Exploits River
to ca t their almon nets, thi interior was not much made u e
of by Newfoundlander . Of cour e other than to do as the
Beothic - cast net into the bountiful river for the same purpo
e.
Thi i our first meeting in Grand FaU -Wind or area, including
Botwood, Bishop's Falls, Badger, Buchan , Millertown,
etc. Although we have for year rotated meeting between
Stephenville, Comer Brook, Gander, Clarenville, Mary town
and St. John ' , that it i only now, due to the great lOOth
anniver ary year that i being celebrated here, that suitable
accommodation for our expected 500 delegates and visitors
are available due to the remodelling of the Joe Byrne Stadium.
We welcome all members who have come from aU of our
many club in good tanding with the Federation. We tru t
that you have ent in many re olution that will be attended to
in order to help our eniors enjoy the benefit of a suitable
lifestyle, and avoid falling through the crack of rule and regulations
that were not aU inclu ive. This we hope to remedy.
It is only through the member of each individual eniors 50+
group Ii ting their problem and bringing them forth at the e
annual meetings that "Gray Power" can be exerted. It is only
when people combine in purpo e that the betterment of the
individual ' circumstance can be acheived. The individual has
little or no chance to better each one' own condition.
Only in unity of the many will your voice be heard.
Have fun! Enjoy the good feUowsrup! And, let each of us look
forward to a great year corning.
Best Wishes
Don Holloway, President
From your Host Committee
We, your hosts, extend to one and all the warmest
of welcome!
This i the 30th annual convention of the Federation,
and besides giving u an opportunity to visit with old

a we can. Your Federation Executive and Board
of Directors work diligently to addre s your concern .
They are your repre entative . They are the one who
make sure that your Resolution reach their intended
destination. All of u together make a formidab le force,
what our Federation Pre ident refers to as "grey
power," and that force continues to grow. Already we
are thou and strong, in thi province alone. Including
the National Federation, we are over 1,000,000 strong
- a formidable force!
We want to say a heartfelt Thank You to Everyone who
participated in any way in planning and bringing to
fruition our first ho ting of the NLPSC Federation. To

1st Vice-President's Message
to Convention
September 2005
Hello Seniors, Greeting from Labrador. It i uch a plea ure to
be among you once again!
A I write, I think about how Senior, a much a , or more than
any other age groups, no matter where we live in this province, are
affected by everything that happens here - by every action of
Government - by people who ee Senior a ' rocking-chair people'
with no more to do than wait to die. Well , do I have news for
people like that! to quote Ward Pike (p) 24 Downhomer, Augu t
2005), I will not lie down, I will not go quietly, do nOltread on me.
We, a Senior , must make that philo ophy part of our being and
take a tand when decision are made which are delrimental to u .
A individual , our voice are mall, but a a group like this, our
united voice are anything but mall. That i why our Convention
are so important: through our Resolutions, our getting together
and di cus ing can be made. Not all changes we eek are achieved
the fir t time around, but we mu t never give up. Even a drop of
water can wear away stone (Hopefully our de ired change won't
take u that long to achieve!)
We are encouraged to get out of our home , ocialize and be
active, but while we can' t afford to fill our ga tank to do thi , our
Provincial Government seems to be quite enthused every time the
price of a barrel of crude oil goes up! Higher crude price have
helped to reduce our Provincial Debt! But with tho e very arne
high crude prices we can t afford either to drive, or heat the home
in which we have no choice but to pend mo t of our time.
In spite of all thi , try to work in your club , encourage each
other - especially tho e on the Board of Director - often a thankless
job. Make sure that your club are more than just a place to
raise money - fund are vital becau e without them we would
have to hut down! Try to keep a balanced per pective.
Remember the Three Mu keteer motto: 'One for All , and All
for One! ' So be it with us Senior!
Plea e come and introduce yourselve to me, and have a good
Convention!

Sincerely,
Shirley Squire

Your invitation to variou functions are greatly appreciated,
I apologize for the fact that I had to deny several.
Somehow, I believe you understand my explanation.
I have kept in contact with my club : Elections,
Installation of Officer ,limited ocial, encouraging

It is good to be together again and to meet many dear

sandwiches (the usual seniors lunch). Of cour e for upper,
the time honoured roast beef dinner was provided.
The Anglican Mini ter from Fortune and the Salvation
Army Officer from Grand Bank honoured us with their
presence.
Our gue t of honour was MHA Judy Foote who provided
all the funding for our rally including bu service
from the 9 communities and the lovely meals and nutrition
breaks. She ha done till for the past even years.
Senior who participate owe a lot to their MHA's like

I am indebted to my wife Elsie for emceeing the rally as
she is a tireless co-worker with me, Best Wi he to all!

Thanks to my supporter for electing me for a econd term

The club in Central are doing well. Since my la t report I

town in Central and received favourable indications of support
for the opening of new enior clubs.
Besides visiting the variou club in the Central Di trict and
attending the Convention in Mary town last year, I wa also
privileged to attend the National Convention in Richmond,
Vancouver. I was a real treat to see more of our great country
and to see some of the things I had before only read about.
Even more exciting wa to witne first hand the dedication of
the National executive and member to improving the lives of
Canada' enior. Numerou re olution were con idered and

accept and agree to implement, greatly enhance our

The Year 2005 will be an exciting one for Grand Fall -

Report from Director, Link F-6
I can't believe one year has passed since I became your
Link Director. During this first year I have been able to
visit all clubs in my zone and was very pleased to have
formed a club at Francois on January 18, 2005 with nineteen
members. "Congratulations Fransway 50 Plus
Club."
Also I would like to say "Thank you" to all the clubs in
my zone who gave me, my wife Robena, my driver Stan
McDonald and his wife Ro e such a warm welcome
when we visited your club.
This has been a great learning experience for me and I
loved every minute of it, and I am looking forward to my
second year as Link Director.
I felt, as a Link Director visiting clubs, talking on the
phone or by receiving mail, brings my elf and the clubs
closer together and it makes for a better working relationship
and it means so much to each club.

Report from Director, Link 7
Greetings and best wishes to all the enior' club in
Newfoundland and Labrador.
On September 25, 2004, I visited Deer Lake Club. I was a little
apprehen ive a this was my first visit to any club as Link Director.
I needn't have been becau e the Deer Lake Club oon made me feel
welcome. T had a very nice visit with them.
At 7 p.m. on the same day I vi ited Cormack Club. Again there
wa no need of my fee ling anxious becau e I was indeed given a
warm welcome. I gave them greetings from the federation and talked
about issues pertaining to the cl ub.
The next day on September 26, I visited Trout River at 2 p.m. and
Woody Point at 7 p.m. Again, the member treated me kindly and I
thoroughly enjoyed both vi it . We talked about any concern they
had.
Members of all four clubs were eager to know about New
Horizon grant .
On September 27, I vi ited Norri Point at 2 p.m. and Rocky
Harbour at 7 p.m. I cannot expre how happy I wa that the members
were so eager to make me feel welcome. I reminded all club
that if there were any concerns to give me a telephone call and I
would contact the federation executive if need be. After three days
of meeting, I headed down the Great Northern Peninsula to home.
On March 29, 2005 I met with the club member of Labrador
City. Many i ue were di cus ed and again the member were
happy to see someone from the federation. One issue we di cu ed
was reimbur ement for member who travel to the convention.
While in Goo e Bay, I tried several time to contact member for
their enior's club but wa unable to find anyone. The president was
out of the country and it was impossible for me to contact another
member of the executive.
On May 17, I again travel led up the Great Northern Peninsula to
Flower's Cove and had an enjoyable hour or so with their club. We
discu ed the convention; they were eager to know all about it. New
Horizon information wa provided.
I hope that I have been orne help to all the club I've vi ited. I
have al 0 been in contact by telephone with all the club in our area.
I poke many time with the pre ident of the Cook's Harbour club.
I wi h all the club ucce in the coming year and look forward

'Tis the human touch in this world that counts,
The touch of your hand and mine,
Which means far more to the fainting heart
Than shelter and bread and wine.
For shelter is gone when the night is o'er
And bread lasts only a day
But touch of the hand and sound of the voice
Sing on in the souls always.

Lyrics & Music by Michael S. Snelgrove
There are many places acro
thi great land.
You'll find many more right here
in Newfoundland.
Go to the centre a place stand in
reknown. It' where we live.
Our proud and mighty town.
It wa from old England that
Northcliffe did ail.
For a place to make paper for it
Daily mail.
The call it went out, there wa work
for men here.
They came by the train load to work
in the town that formed here.
CHORUS
Come to the place that's the
best in the world.
Come for the friendship and cheer.
And to help us celebrate our one
hundred years.
They came here from every
harbour and cove.
They left from the places they
grew up and loved.
They came here for work and to
make a new home.
It changed all their lives to give
up where they came from.
They hung up their nets and they
pulled in their line.
For the mill in Grand Falls offered
more pro perou time .
They changed all their live and
created one new and
tarted thi wonderful town for
me and you.
CHORUS
We've grown arti t , mu ician
and actor galore.
And many a man went to right
in the war.
They're all returning to visit their past,
in thi birthday year, it hould
be uch a bla t.
Champion of port and orne tar in
the art .
Here i the place where they all
got their tart.
Pioneer in their field were the
people from here,
returning home to celebrate
one hundred year .
CHORUS
Hunting and fi hing and adventure
in tore.
Hiking and camping, we have 0 much
in store. Music and drama, art galore
is here.
The town it ha grown here for
one hundred year .
It grew despite people' worrie and
fears.
It's with tood tragedy, turmoil and
strife but a better place can' t be found
to pend your Life.
It's a grand little town, we hould all
be quite proud.
Lift up your gla e and hout it
out loud.
We're happy and loyal to be living
here, and we will Lay for another
hundred year .

so that we may know you better through one another.
Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

When you practice it, it's caution; when the
other fellow does, it's cowardice.
Credit is a clever financial trick that enables us
to spend what we haven't got.
She was so sure of getting her own way, she
could even write her diary entries in advance.
A critic writes because he has to say something,
not because he has something to say.
The man of few words is an asset everywhere,
except when he is solving a crossword puzzle.
In a democracy you can speak your mind; the
only trouble is getting someone to listen.
Most of us won't be contented with our lot until
it's a lot more.
The worst thing about a reducing diet is that you
have to desert desserts.
Guided missiles are nothing new; David killed
the Giant Goliath with one.

THE FOREST PRODUCTS INDUSTRY in
this province was born in the early
1900'5. Not long after, a vibrant
community sprang up around it in
Central Newfoundland ... a credit to
the drive and commitment of an
exceptional people in the face of
tremendous challenges. Today, that
spirit is alive and well in the people
of Abitibi Consolidated. Like their
ancestors who tamed this beautiful
land, our employees carry on the
tradition of excellence that characterizes
this town. As Grand Falls-Windsor marks
its first centennial, Abitibi Consolidated
acknowledges the vigorous contribution
of a rare breed of men and women.
As we move ahead together. we look
to our past and our achievements with
pride to guide us into the future.
