(Nain) Dear Editor!
I would appreciate it if you printed
this out in your next newspaper.
Thank you. I'm sure there are a lot
of people dissatisfied with the way
the nurses are working in our hospital.
Especially one nurse in particular.
I think she's so proud and
lazy she don't care about the pain
we're going through. What did she
come ·to Nain for? Mostly she sits
in the sitting ~oom,knitting away,
and when one of the aides tell her
a certain patient want to see her,
all she does is grumble "vlhy didn't
she come to clinic today?" ,"Why
didn't she come earlier today?",
"What do she want?" and such.Sure,
even if we want a replacement for
her,NWR is gonna consider her then
they won't know what's s bad about
her. When there are any doctors,
dentists or any other IGA people
she tries to start working better
than she did before they came. She
always seems to be in a hurry to .
get rid of her out-patients at hours
after five.She'd give the patient
a few pills and some lousy directions,
and sometimes without telling
them the name of the drug. A few
days later your pills are gone and
the pain or discomfort still persists
and you ask the nurse for a refill.
Then she'd say nYou're taking
too much pills then~ How would you
Kablunaks like to be treated the
way we Inuit are being treated?
Like some tough dogs without a pain
in the world?! don't like that one
bit!And this nurse belongs out there
wherever she came from. All I ask
is that we be treated for our pain
and discomfort,not for our color,
race or whatever she hates about us
All we get is a few grunts and sent
home with some ASA.They get an awful
lot of money for sitting around,

MARRIAGE/ THE LJ,~J AND YOU
If a person wishes to be married,
that person may get married either
by a minister or by a marriage com-m•
lssl• oner.
If a person gets married by a minister,
the marriage ceremony will
be held in a church just the same
way as it always has been done. If
a person wishes to be married without
going to the minister then he
may go to a marriage commissioner
and the ceremony will be held in
the commissioners office.The ceremony
will be very different to a
church ceremony.
Every person who wishes to be married
must have a licence to get
married. It doesn't matter where
you plan to get married or who is
going to carry out the marriage ceremony,
you must hcve a licence.
You can on~y get a marriage licence
from an issuer of marriage licences.
The issuer of marriage licences
in Nain is Abel Leo.The issuer
of marriage licences in Hopedale
is Ruth Flowers.
The issuer of marriage licences
cannot marry you. The Minister or
the Marriage Commissioner cannot
give you a licence to get married.
What this means is that a person
who wishes to get married must see
two people.The first person will
give you a licence to get married
and the second person will then carry
out the marriage ceremony. If
you see the minister firstthat is
fine,out he will eventually send
you off to see the marriage licence
issuer.
Every person who wishes to get
married must go to see the Issuer
of marriage licences at least eight
(8) days before the day on which
the couple plans to be wed. The
reason for this is because the Issuer
of marriage licences must wait
for 4 days before he gives you the
licence to get married and the minister
must have the licence in his
hands for 4 days before he may marry
you.
If there is good reason to do so
then both the marriage licence Issuer
and the minister may shorten
the period of time that you have
to wait.
The first step:Applying
The first step,of course,is to
find someone who wants to marry you
The first step in law is to go to
the Issuer of marriage licences to
apply for the licence. To apply for
a marriage licence you must fill
out an application form,and complete
an affidavit swearing to the Truth
of the information in your application.

The application form asks for
full personal information about
both the Bride and the Bridegroom.
It also asks for Information about
the parents of both the Bride and
the Bridegroom.
It is best if both the Bride and
the Bridegroom go along to the Issuer
of marriage licences.If it
happens that only one of you is in
a position to go to the Issuer of
Licences that is fine but you must
take along proof of the age of the
person you plan to marry and you
must make sure that you know all
the personal details concerning
your beloved,including the maiden
name of that person's mother. If
you do not know all the information
you may take the form away with
you so that all the information
can be put down in it.
After you have filled out the
application form one of you must
fill out a piece of paper called
an Affidavit in Support of the Application.
An Affidavit is a piece
of paper on which is information
that you swear to be true. This piece
of paper must be signed and
sworn in front of the marriage licence
Issuer. The main purpose behind
this is to make sure that there
are no legal reasons that the
couple cannot marry.
The next thing that you must do
at this first step is to pay the
marriage licence Issuer a Licence
Fee of ten dollars.
The second step:Waiting. The next
step is for you to wait 4 days. The
4 days starts from the time that
you give the licence Issuer the
Affidavit. The idea behind this is
to give the marriage licence Issuer
a chance to check into the information
you have given on your
application to make sure that everything
is alright and that you
may legally get married. Part of
the idea behind. the wait is to give
the couple a chance to think
things over.
The marriage licence Issuer must
wait 4 days before giving you your
licence but if you can satisfy the
Issuer that there are exceptional
and urgent circumstances why you
should not wait 4 days, then he may
give you your licence right away,
or before the 4 days is up.
The third step :.Getting the licence
After the 4 days of waiting is over
you can go along to the marriage
licence Issuer to pick up your
licence.At this time the Issuer
can refuse to give you your licence
if he thinks that there is a
good legal reason that you should
not be married , and he must not gi- ~ ...

ve out a licence where he believes
that either of the two people is
under the influence of booze or a
drug.
When you get the licence the chances
are that the Issuer will give
you 3 pieces of paper.
(a) A long piece of paper that is
little bit thinner than a Nain newspaper
page. This is a marriage
licence. The bottom half of the marriage
licence will not be filled
out at this time.
(b) An almost square piece of paper
with a black pattern around the outside
edge.This is the marriage certificate.
It will not be filled ·
out at this time.
(c. ) A long piece of paper , the same
slze as a Nain newspaper page call-ed
Register of marriages.This'will
also not be filled out.
The marriage licence is valid for
a period of 30 days.This means that
you should try to get married within
30 days from the time that the
marriage licence Issuer gives you
your licence.If,for some good reason,
you cannot get married before
the 30 days is up you can ask the
marriage licence Issuer to give
you a more time.He can give you between
30 and 60 days more to get
married. You do not have to pay any
money for this extension of time.
The fourth step :Waiting again.
When the marriage licence Issuer
gives you the marriage licence,the
blank marriage certificate and the
blank marriage Register,you should
then take all these papers to the
clergyman who will be doing the
marrl• age ceremony.
The clergyman must wait for 4
days from the time that he gets the
licence before marrying you. If there
are exceptional and urgent circumstances
the minister may carry
out the ceremony, before the 4 days
is up. Once again all you can do
is wait.During this time the minister
(or a marriage commissioner)
will fill out the information needed
to complete the Certificate of
Mar~iage and the Marriage Certificate
put he will not sign them or
date them.
Again~part of the idea behind making
you wait is to give you a chance
to "cool off",in other words
to think about what it is that the
two of you are getting into.
The fifth step:Registered as married.
After the wedding ceremony is
over the person who performs the
ceremony will require you to sign
the marriage Register.The marriage
Register must be signed by each
of the people getting married,by
each of the two witnesses and by
the minister(or marriage commissio-

The minister may require you to
sign the church's marriage register
as well.
After all the signing and witnessing
is over,the minister will
give you your Marriage Certificate
which,you will remember,is the almost
square piece of paper that
you got from the Licence Issuer in
the first place.
You are now married. You can forget
about all the paperwork and -
papers and celebrate.
People under 19.
Any person who is under 19 and who
wishes to get married may have to
have the consent of a parent or
guardian before a licence will be
given to that person. If you are
under 19 the Marriage Licence Issuer
will give you all the help and
information you need.
Conclusion. This is a step by step
account of the things that have to
be done ordinary person over 19
who wishes to be married. There are
other forms and other rules for
those who are divorced or who were
married before,somewhere else,but
who wish to be married to each other
again in Newfoundland.
If you have any problems or questions
about what must be done to
get illarried your minister or your
community marriage licence Issuer
or the staff of Labrador Legal Services
should be able to help you.
If you need help, you shouldn't be

(Nain) Our place outside of Nain is
called Uikvasuk it is on the north
side of Antones and we do not want
people calling it Antones because
in Inuktut its called Uikvasuk and
in english its called Cape Little.
We are scared that when oil research
is being done we will loose this
land. We do not want anyone who is
not from Labrador to build there. We
want help from the community council
or LIA,let us know who can help
us! ~e do not want anyone to take
our land,it is the only place we
can make a little money. We are writing
to Kinatuinamot Illengajuk readers.

(Nain)The craft council is trying
to raise money to pay for the oil
of the craft centre,therefore we
are asking everyone in Nain to bring
baked goods for us to sell,if
you are unable to bake yourself please
bring some flour to me,Rose
Ford.We have tried this before and
we have only been told that they ..
cannot help but even if its a loaf
of bread it would help.Let us try
and help each other, also I have heard
they want a bake sale for the
new church funds.Let us try and help
each better than before.Also when
vou get some caribou we would
like some meat even if its a small

DISS'\TISFIED
(Nain)I'm very dissatisfied about
the handi-craft house and certain
days its open,it's open only Monday
and Friday,when a person wishes
to sell or buy something we have
to wait until those certain days
when it opens.
The craft council or craft committee
says that the building was
put there for the people to use
or go to when they want to sell or
buy goods. Why then did the Government
waste good money? Tax payers
money to put up the building when
its not being used or open all through
the week? I feel that the
building should be open not only
Monday and ~riday but also Tuesday
'ltJednesday and Thursday. I myself
like to go and look around and buy
something tha t interests me. I
can't very well buy or sell anything
if the place is never open
can I?
The craft ~ouse shouldn't be used
for storage other than the craft
material.Il wasn't put there
for a storage fo~ canoes and 11hatever
might be hanging around
~chere.
