"Catchie" pronounced "_Kedige._" I learned this on C.B.C. radio in "Late" October 1966. A number of unnamed fishermen were interviewed about the Newfoundland fishery in the early days of this century. One old captian (at least he was called captain) said a "Kedgie" was a young boy 12 or 13 years of age on board a schooner who stays aboard with "cookie" (the cook) and the captain while the dories are out on the water. His job is to 'catch' the lines from the dories and ties them up when they comes alongsides.' Hence 'catchie' or 'kedgie.' |
