94 Priest. _Light_. _Big Black Dog._ (North River) [check] _Ghosts_. Spirits. GHOST EXPLAINS etc. H. Of course...is it "exorcising" _ghosts_? [_PT_] _spirits_ [_PT_] ? JW.Yeah. H. There's one about...think it was _Dr.Whel(an)_ - one of the _Priest_[s] [_PT_].There was a house next to _the Priest_ [_PT_]- I guess 'bout where the convent is now: place where they used to see the _big black dog_ [_PT_].Anyway _the Priest_ [_PT_] always used to see a _light_ _[PT]_ around his house.And...my mother tells this one also...always,and _the light_, _[PT]_ used to annoy him. So he asked (t)his man one night to come with him.He said, '(Joey??) ...'he said,'(there's) nothing to be afraid of.' So _the Priest_ [_PT_] [_PT_]went around the house; the man he had with him had to carry the candle,a lighted candle. And the story goes _the light_ _[PT]_ wasn't seen after....This...this is an...an old story.It's...well,less than a hundred years,but... JW. Did he do any praying or any other...? H. Apparently...oh,yes: praying, yes. JW. Praying all/the time and... H. Mm-mm. JW....following the man with the candle? H.No,the man was following him, I think. JW. The man was following him. H.Mm-mm. JW.Yeah. And this was at night-time? H. Mm-mm.Oh yes. JW.An' while we' re on the topic: [the Black Dog] was seen there! That's the first time I' ve (heard about that). H.Oh yes,the...the convent is there now,in the same place: it's a _hollow_. 'Up in _the hollow_' it's called, you see. JW.What's the stories about /the dog?/ H. Usually a _big black dog_ [_PT_] [_PT_]walks out of the water. You see,the water's on one side of the road and (a) field on the other. JW. It's a pond, is it? H. _River_; you know, the North _River_. JW.The river itself. OVER... [reverse] H. And /the dog//[PT]/ is big, black, big eyes - saucer eyes, you see. An' the dog/[PT] gets smaller as it goes away from you.Been seen by several people, of course.Hasn't been seen lately. JW. Is is a harmful /dog/? Does it...how does it act?Is it an omen of death,or what does it do? H.No.It's just seen, that's all. JW. Just seen.There...there's nothing...no-one's been associated with it? No-one knows whose /dog/ it is, where it came from? H. No. Oh no.No,it's supposed to be (the Devil) ([PT]). JW. An' which direction does it go? It's supposed to be (the Devil?) H. Oh yes.It com- es from the water an' goes toward _the hills_. JW. Yeah.Just dissappears to- wards the _hills_? H. Mm-mm. JW. And nobody's...nobody takes this as a sign of death or...? H. No. JW. What happens if a person sees it?Have people seen it and reacted to it in some way? H. No,not at all.Except my mother's very nervous for it (yet?) - well/not now,after... (they have) the street-lights,you see. But I remember,it's only about three or four years ago,my mother came down _the river_, and my brother. An' Mom got home, she go in the house. She said, 'Did you see that out there in _the hollow_?' He said, 'What?' She said, 'There was _somebody_ stood...stood up up there!' She said, 'When we went along by it, 'she said, 'it was...it was gone!' 'Eh?' he said. 'I didn't see much.' Yes,see something, he said.I said, 'Dont know what it was.' 'Go way, Wayne [??]! 'he said. 'Thats _a stick_ they got up in hte hole in he road,' he said. 'No, 'she said.It wasn't _a stick.' Well, I says, 'Ill see what it is.' I took the bike,an' I went up. An' 'tis a... it was _a stick_ alright. Gervase Hurley (T F73-67) (North River) C418, 67-13 |
