We gladly avail ourselves of this opportunity to thank our employees and friends who worked so hard to save our premises on the night of the Big Fire", and whose persistent efforts were so nigh proving successful. As we look back upon that awful scene we prize highly the many evidences of friendliness and kindly sympathy then practically exhibited. The Fire. When we commenced to battle with the fire, we saw that it meant a hard hand-to-hand fight against fearful odds. There was a possibility of victory. A hose was not to be had, but buckets there were, and willing hands quickly had these filled and conveyed to all points of danger. Soon the heat became intense. On three sides we were surrounded by a sea of fire. Glass, Trembling in the Intensity of the Heat, shivered and fell into atoms. Sashes and window frames kindled into flames, only to be, immediately doused with water from the hands of some watchful assistant or friend. The first spot to demand special effort was the Eastern Wareroom. There the fire entered a window and was only extinguished after some difficulty. We all saw that A Hard Time was Vet to Come, It was impossible that the stable, built of wood, could escape. It lay immediately at back of Eastern Wareroom and abutted against the Fish Store. Ere long it was a blazing mass menacing both buildings. Those stationed on the breastwork, however, did good work with their ropes and buckets, and passed along a constant supply of water to those, who, Standing Almost Amid the Flames, continued to dash bucketful after bucketful upon the windows and other parts as they ignited. At one time, suddenly and without warning, the whole window of the Tea Room was in a blaze and the cry was raised, " It's all over now." But, no! a few well directed buckets fixed that; and, for a short time, We Breathed Freely. Still we.kept fighting away, now ?t one spot, now at another. One time it woidc* be the Hat Department, then the Retail Store, . ext, one of the dwelling houses, and so the night was wearing on and our strength becoming exhausted. Yet the worst had to come. After a hard fight in the Cordage Store, L was fourd Impossible to Save It, the roof being overlapped by iat of an adjoining building. The whole store was shortly a sea of flame. And now the great stand of tbe night was made. Climbing to the roof of tl 3 Boot Room, two or three heroes fought for a couple of hours, amid a storm of sparks and Host Terrific Heat. Nothing daunted, one would keep dashing in the buckets of water as they were passed up the ladders, while another, with an chopped and cleared away portions of the roof, underneath which, the flames were creeping. Amid the choking, smoky atmosphere inside the building, others also were fighting hard. Hurrah!
