This scientific joumal is published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science entirely in electronic format. It is composed of peer-reviewed articles, complete with graphics, organized into online databases. The journal publishes research reports, reviews, meta-analyses, methodological papers and editorials on trials or therapies, procedures and other interventions relevant to care in the areas of clinical medicine. Clinical alerts from research groups, consensus programs, professional societies and pharmaceutical firms are published in the news section as soon as they are available. Letters to the editor and other commentaries such as editorials in response to reports already published, are linked to original documents. Searched in a WINDOWS environment, the journal presents the full textof a document with hypertext- linked tables and figures. Links to MEDLINE abstracts from 1986 to the present are provided where available. Publication is continuous and updated daily when information is available. At present, a search on the On-line Journal ofCurrentClinicalTrials may be requested from the Health Sciences Library's computerized search service. When searching MEDLINE, CINAHL (Nursing) and IPA (Pharmacy) databases on compact disc in the library, the SEARCH command will present the following message: "Enter search term. Enclose phrase in quotes." This means that when you are searching aphrase (anything more than one word), you must enclose it in double quotation marks. It does not mean that you must enter aphrase. Phrases will be searched, but remember that the computer will only search a phrase exactlv as it is tvped. Think about your topic first and consider any synonyms or different ways of expressing it. Search all of these, either as phrases, or broken down into single-word concepts joined by the operator AND. Also consider the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) command which allows you to check the system's own thesaurus of terms. You may find a ready-made phrase that describes your topic. For example, when searching a topic such as "long-term care of the frail elderly," do not search as a phrase. You will get few, if any, citations. Break the subject down into concepts and join What's inside?
