(From the Harbour Grace Mercury, May \5.) A most brutal assault and robbery Was perpetrated today at Saddle-Hill, on the high road between Carbo- ar and this town. Mr, Hfkmak Lott, a young man the employment of Mr 11 i:mi y Winton, printer, in . John'?, when returning to this place from Carbonear, was suddenly attacked from behind by four ruffians with crape over their faces, who knocked him down, beat him cruelly, and then dragged hits ih among the bushes, where tney cut off part of each of his ears, and after applying clay to the wounds, robbed him of seven eight dollars, which was all thc money he had in liis pockets. He lay senseless on thc ground for awhile From tho severity of the blow inflicted atthe commencement, but the effusion of blood while in the bushes causing him to revive a little, he perceived ono ofthe fellows attempting to snatch at a sword stick which he held in his hand; the former succeeded in wresting the sheath, and at this moment, wc understand Mr. L, struck him a blow "on the face, with the blade, which he thinks did some damage, and may probably servo as a clue to lead to the discovery of at least one of the perpetrators of this foul and barbarous affair. Some time after thc ruffians left their unfortunate victim, he was discovered lying on a rock, from whence he was assisted to get to the Court House here, which he reached with extreme difficulty, and was iccoived and kindly attended to by Mr. Coriuf, and surgical assistance promptly procured for him, The whole town at this moment is Igreatly excited in consequence of this barbarous. .occj*r- -TretKeT-.natriom(.'re"c>]icc"5anyas Srr."*Lb*r*r is an atnia- " ble and inoflensive young man, and much esteemed by all classes. -: TO BE LET- LOW. J. & W. Stkwakt dr. Co. and Irom the experience ihe- has had in the conduct and management ol a House of Genteel Entertainment, she flatters herself that no House i. Town can afford greater satifaclion to gentlemen Irom the Outports and elsewhere tarrying in St. John's on business or pleasure than lhe VICTORIA HOTEL. She can accommodate single gentlemen with (he besl Lodgings at lhe --neapest rate ; orwhule I am il ies, before settling down, could be accommodated wiih convenient and pleasant furnished Lodgings. The House is situated in a clean aiid quiet neighbourhood. Miss M. will always have on hand, Winks and Cordials ofthe besl description. She' will also provide Lunchkoxs and Soon, at the | shortest notice. • bi. John's, Aj-"i 14, 1910. The following are the particulars of the outrage committed upon Mr. Herman Lott, as narrated by himself, taken from the Star of yesterday— •• I left Carbonear on Friday last a 12 o'clock j after proceeding as fur as Saddle Hill, about half way, I was suddenly stopped by two men who came out trom the thicket on the right hand aide j their faces covered •* ith black crape ; immediately 2 men more made their appearance, when one ot" the latter remarked ' Long I looked for come at last,' upon hearing this I immediately prepared, drew a sword stick, and warned them to keep off; however, two ofthoparty still advanced and I made a blow-at one of them across thc face, when he ejaculated ' Blooel fo/- blood you b—I' Another then [struck mo a violent blow in the'.forehead and stunned ne ; while insensible I was carried into thc thicket, ny mouth was stuffed with dirt, and also my ears; one if them pummelled my head with a stone, which completely stupified mc ; while in this state, they cut off my cars and left me Wben I got up I found myself alone ; after a short time 1 gained the road, made tho best of my way to Harbor Grace, where I discovered I had been robbed of seven dollars, which I suppose to hate been taken by the fellow*. I have omitted to mention that shortly after I had got into the road, I appealed to a man for assistance, which he very reluctantly gave mc for about 12 or 14 aces, and then left ine.—nearer Harbor Graco I met another man who after 1 had passed him came back, and when he saw what had happened, he said ' OA, you'r nipped I' and then returned towards Carbonear. We regret sincerely to be called upon to place so revolting an outrage upon record. The information was received here on Sunday last, and has naturally awakened feelings of the liveliest indignation in this community. The perpetration of so foul a deed in open day, and upon an unoffending individual! Can it be believed that in a civi- zed community men can be found so to outrage the common feelings of humanity ? The fact, how- *, is undeniable, and this is unhappily not the first exhibition of this inhuman spirit within a few- years ; but we trust that unlike the former, the authors of this atrocity may not escape the just penalty oftheir offence. It is high time thata term should be set upon that impunity which has but too long attached in Conception Bay to such violations loflaw & of right. The people ofthat district are im- patively called upon to aid in bringing the offenders to punishment. In justice to himself every honest man is bound to use his best efforts with a view to this end, for until a discovery is made, suspicion will attach perhaps to many who look upon the deed with abhorrence. The actors, whoever they mav be, should net be permitted to infest any community with their polluted presence j let then [therefore bc brotagkt to light, and let the people show how little do they sanction such.acta by tho desire they manifest to • root ont the depredators from amongst tlitm.—Newfoundlander. •
