THE EVENING TELEGRAM. VOL. 20. Price: One Cent. ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 1898 $3.00 Per Annum No. 192. FOREST FIRES Near Harbor Grace PEOPLE'S AIpR KINDLED Against (be Government. They Want Covernor Murray to Remain—An Appeal to the Country on the Railway " Deal" Demanded. [Spffimito Evening Telegram.') Harbok Gbacs, Last Evening. A serious forest (ire is raging about nine miles west of tiie town. If it continues the greeu woods back will be burnt, and barrens made of the tract of country where men obtain wood. A second fire is raging farther vest. The first evidently originated <n the New Harbor barrens; the second near Spider Pond. The Ocean Ranger has sailed for Glasgow with oil for Murray & Company. Harbor Grace is with St. John's in Ihe matter of petitioning for the relention as Governor of Sir Herbert Mm iay. Also for petitioning against the Railway "deal." Nine-tenths of the people will sign to have the " deal '* submitted to them. Petitions should be sent broadcast without < clay, so that the Home authorities >an see (hat that measure is not en< orsed by the electorate. Go ahead, citizens uf St. John's! Let the world know that public spirit is not killed. Harbor Grace wants the Railway contract submitted to the people at the polls and also the retention of Sir Herbert. FOOTBALL NOTES I As was expected, ■ larjte number of spectators were present at Llewellyn ground* l;i-t evening to witness the iiiiilcli between the Star and Terra Nova team s. The latter team took the western goal, an i played with wind and blop< in their favor. During the first ball of the game the play was very even. Tw<> corners were secured by eaeli team, but K. Power, for the Star, scored goal No. 1. Play being resumed, the Stars worked hard and had the best of the game for several minutes, although the T. N.*s put up an excellent showing. A short while after Kyan secured the second goal. The Terra Nova's made some excellent shots for goal, but Knglish and Power, the Star full-backs, defended admirably. The Stars hustled the ball down the field, past the full-backs, and llyan again was successful in scoring the third goal. .Fust here W. Collins received a nasty blow in the ehest, but was all right again in a minute or so. The Stars now pressed hard, and keeping the ball well down on their opponents' goal, Power scoixl goal No. 4. An excellent rush up tin- field was made by the T.N."B, Iml the redoubtable Vinicombe prevented the hall from going too far towards the Mar goal. Tin; Terra Novas rushed matters towards the end, but, unfortunately, oio lint secuiea goal. Two other goals were scored by the Stars before time was called, which made the result: Star, 0 go ils: Terra Nova, nil. Although the T. N.'s failed to secure a goal. Mill they are to be congratulated on rh<- good display of football that was given. N. Vinicombe worked hard, and played biilianily, though, unfortunately, he was often not assisted. Pike did come good work, but has played better on Former occasions. Marshall and K.-istcrbrook were prominent also. Never did the Stars play better than hist evening. .1. Vinicombe was all that could he desired, and did mucli towards helping the forwards. K. Power, Condon and IJvan were very conspicuous anil played a iattling game. W. Collins was also <;0.,d in the half-back line. Wc would again suggest that the remaining matched be stalled earlier, say 8.18 p.m., as by the time the game was finished last night it was difficult to discern the ball. Tiik final alliance mdeh, K.A.C. vs. Marshall .V. Kodger, will l>e played on Monday morning next. As these teams an on equal footing a lively game is expected. Upon the result of this match depends the winning ol I'ne cup. MARINE NOTES. Tin. S.S.
