Left port with a moderate W.N.W. breeze blowing, and on Friday was beset by a strong N.W. wind, which assumed The Proportions of a Gale at midday on Saturday. The sea ran high and furious, lashing the ship in a threatening manner, several shipments of water almost completely inundating her. Skylights were shattered, movables washed from the deck, and water flooded the cabin and officers' rooms. There was no abatement of the storm till Sunday night. Fairly good weather intervened till Friday last, when the wind freshened from the N.E., and rapidly gathered strength. At 4..'J0 p.m. it became necessary to stop the ship. The bilge pump and rods and circulating and feed pumps were damaged, and iciii[(»riirj Repairs were effected. The position of the ship at the time was 180 miles S.E. of St. John's. Another ga'e was encountered on Saturday, and a slow down till 2.1 5 p.m. on Sunday was necessitated. At times the ship had to he hove to, so heavy were the seae, an occasional one of which made a clean breach over the ship. The weight of water on the decks at times was terrible, and large quantities of it descended to the stoke Ik.lds and shifted coal tlieie. At 7 o'clock in the evening, all the crew who could be spared were engaged trimming the coal, to get the ship on an even keel. At 1 a.m. on Monday another evil came. The pumps became choked, and there was a pressure of water by way of stokehold plates. Then the Kngiisc ICoctm ItccaiiK' Flootlcd. the nun filing there having to stand nearly waist deep in water.
