Tbe teachers of public schools are requested to remember that the subject of education will be discussed in the House of Assembly on Tuesday next, and that James Murray, Esq-, will then present a petition. He has been entrusted with this document by the President and officers of the Newfoundland Teachers' Association, the embodiments of which contain Three Resolutions. passed unanimously by the body at their half-yearly meeting held in Spaniard's Bay on January 7th, 1891, namely: (1) Increased denominational grant; (2) a stateaided insurance scheme ; and (3) minimum salaries question. It is expected that the teachers of the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Methodist denominations in St. John's and tbe outlying settlements will all muster and shew up well in the House on that occasion. *—•••-* QUEEN GIVES £30 For MM of SpringhiU Willows. To-day a fresh breeze prevails from E.N.E., with fine and clear weather. The S.S. Nimrod went we6t at 4 p.m. yesterday, and the brigantine May passed inward at 9 a.m., followed by the brigantine Rosavere atl p.m. to-day. Barometer 30.25; thermometer 40. >-•••—< LOCAL EVENTS. Cathedral Women's Association.— Tbe members of the Cathedral Women's Association are requested to meet in the Boys' Sunday School Room on to-morrow (Tuesday) evening ; doors open at 6.30. A full attendance of all members is particularly requested. ♦ Sunday School Festival.—One of the most pleasing events of this week will be the Cochrane Street Methodist Sunday School Festival, on Wednesday evening. Preparations are being made on an elaborate scale, and the programme promises to be one of great attractiveness. The Source of the City's Water Supply.—lt is the intention of the municipality, if the proposal be feasible, to take possession of all lands bordering on Windsor Lake. The recent lamentable fatalities have impelled the Council to this action ; for, had the rule been adhered to, the deplorable loss of tbe lives of Frederick Squires and the young e,'\r\ Anthony would cot have occurred. Tbe Council should take possession at once of ungranted lands •butting on the water of tbe lake. LOCAL EVENTS. Academia Practice.—There will be a practice to-night at 8 in the rooms for those taking part in the Athenteum concert, March 16; after which a meeting of the library committee will be held. 0 To Halifax and New York—The S.S. Portia sails this afternoon, taking the following passengers :— For Halifax—George O. Edwards, James Greene. New York—Ed. Kielly, Mr. Nearv, J. Ballman, Martin Newman, Margaret Newman,Albert Stone. -*. Remember the Poor!— Don't forget the entertainment for the poor to-morrow (Tuesday) evening at the Star of the Sea Hall, under the distinguished patronage of Lady O'Brien. Judging from the programme, which we publish this evening, a rare treat is in store for tho3e who attend. ♦ The Western Mail Arrives.—The steamer Volunteer arrived here at 4 o'clock yesterday morning, having experienced a great deal of foggy and unpleasant weather on this trip. She brought seven hundred barrels of herring ; one hundred and fifteen carcases venison, and sundry other consignments of fresh halibut, fish, tongues, &c. Her passengers are: Channel—Mrs. B. O'Rourke, Miss M. Malloney, Mr. L. McCulsb; Grand Bank—Mr. Wm. French; Burin—Capt. J Vlgus, Mr. Burfitt; St. Marys-Mr. F. E. Ireland, Captain O'Neill; Trepassey—Mr. A. Simms; ten in steerage. » A Prodigious Distance Travelled for Berths.—We have heard much mention of the distances and sacrifices undergone by outport men in journeying to St. John's for berths to the ice; but the feat of Frederick House, William Cole, George Matthews, and John Pike in travelling from Goose Bay, Bonavista Bay—one hundred and sixty milee—tops the record. They were a week coming, crossed the barrens, and slept in the P. O. couriers' tilts. House expects a berth with Captain Arthur Jackman, who may rely tbat House is a man who will think little of miles or leagues in trying to find seals. Cathedral Women's Association.— Tbe members of the Cathedral Women's Association are requested to meet in the Boys' Sunday School Room on to-morrow (Tuesday) evening ; doors open at 6.30. A full attendance of all members is particularly requested. ♦ Sunday School Festival.—One of the most pleasing events of this week will be the Cochrane Street Methodist Sunday School Festival, on Wednesday evening. Preparations are being made on an elaborate scale, and the programme promises to be one of great attractiveness. The Source of the City's Water Supply.—lt is the intention of the municipality, if the proposal be feasible, to take possession of all lands bordering on Windsor Lake. The recent lamentable fatalities have impelled the Council to this action ; for, had the rule been adhered to, the deplorable loss of tbe lives of Frederick Squires and the young e,'\r\ Anthony would cot have occurred. Tbe Council should take possession at once of ungranted lands •butting on the water of tbe lake. LOCAL EVENTS. She brought seven hundred barrels of herring ; one hundred and fifteen carcases venison, and sundry other consignments of fresh halibut, fish, tongues, &c. Her passengers are: Channel—Mrs. B. O'Rourke, Miss M. Malloney, Mr. L. McCulsb; Grand Bank—Mr. Wm. French; Burin—Capt. J Vlgus, Mr. Burfitt; St. Marys-Mr. F. E. Ireland, Captain O'Neill; Trepassey—Mr. A. Simms; ten in steerage. » A Prodigious Distance Travelled for Berths.—We have heard much mention of the distances and sacrifices undergone by outport men in journeying to St. John's for berths to the ice; but the feat of Frederick House, William Cole, George Matthews, and John Pike in travelling from Goose Bay, Bonavista Bay—one hundred and sixty milee—tops the record. They were a week coming, crossed the barrens, and slept in the P. O. couriers' tilts. House expects a berth with Captain Arthur Jackman, who may rely tbat House is a man who will think little of miles or leagues in trying to find seals.
