THE EVENING TELEGRAM. Vol. 18. Price : One Cent. St, John's, Newfoundland, Wednesday, June 24, 1896. $3.00 Per Annum. No. 147. By Telegraph. THE LOST "CAPULET." ♦ Full Particulars of the Disaster. *. The Ship Struck With a Fearful Crash — Oallant Conduct of the Captain—4 Miraculous Escape from a Watery Grave —Looting- of Cargo, Mails, Ac. Special to the Evening Telegram. Placentia, This Afternoon. The S.S. Grand Lake arrived here this morning, bringing mails, passengers and crew of the ill-fated steamship Capulet. 0u the evening of the 22nd the steamer, during a dense fog, strgck the clift at Marine Cove, near St. Shotts, St. Mary's Bay. The ship was going at easy speed at the time of the disaster. There was uotime to reverse the engines when the land was sighted. The ship struck and A Fearful Crash Ensued. Perfect order was restored by the captain. Boats were lowered immediately, and the ladies and children first lowered into them, followed by the male passengers and crew. After great danger, rowing around for upwards of an hour, a landing was safely effected. Before leaving the sinking ship rockets were fired. Through some mismanagement a whole box exploded, severely, though uot seriously, injuring live of the ship's crew. Iler cargo consisted of live thousand cases of lobsters and a portion of deals for Liverpool, England. The ship is a total loss, lying in a Shnpclcss Broken Mass. The captain and second ollicer remained to look after the interests of the underwriters. Out of seventy bags of mail but nim* were saved, and these, unfortunately, mostly papers.
