THE EVENING TELEGRAM. Vol 18 Price : One Cent. St. John's, Newfoundland, Monday, February 17 1896 $3.00 Per Annum. No 40. Latest by Telegraph. Tho Trnnsvnnl Legislature Oppo§e Kriiger'sVisit—Germany Claims the Right to Interfere in the Trniisvnal— Bourgeois' Ministry (-ensured. Halifax, N.b., Feb. 17. The Trausvaal Legislature opposes President Kruger's proposed visit to England, which he has consented to make at the invitation of the Right Honorable Joseph Chamberlain. The German Foreign Minister says that Germany claims a right to interfere in the Transvaal controversy- The French Senate have twice censured the present ministry, but Bourgeois has decided uot to resign, as the < harnber of Deputies support him. Relations are straiued at Berlin and Paris. {Special tri tht Evening /'elegram.) Capk Rack. This Evening. Two unknown schooners were oft here yesterday, bound wear. The barqueutine Flora passed toward at 3 p.m. to-day. Wind N.W., fresh, and weather tine and clear. Bar. 29.10; ther. 35. IN THE POLICE COURT. f Before His Honor Judge Conrov.J M. Murray, a 22-year-old seaman, was assessed $1. David Cain, laborer, Omar's Hill, and John Hayse, Tank Lane, were each fined a similar amount for precisely the same reason, to wit: the trio took too much. Geo. Moore, aged 40. painter, Brazil's Square, was adjudged insane and sent t<»the Asylum. Postmaster General Fraser complained against James Murray of a breach of the 76th sectien of the Post Office Act. The facts, as we have ascertained them, are briefly:—Mr. Murray wrote an article on Newfoundland and directed it to the Dominion Illustrated News, Canada. The article was forwarded by parcel post. The parcel, for some reason, was never delivered, and in time found its way into the " Dead Letter Office "at Ottawa. Cpon being opened it was found to contain a letter addressed to the editor of the paper to whom the article referred to had been sent. Mr. Devereux recited The Above Facts to the Court, and Judge Prowse took the matter under advisement. The <ourt was doubtful of his jurisdiction as a magistrate to decide the case, and he pjstponed it until such time as he might get the opinion of Judge Conroy on the matter. GATHERED THIS AFTERNOON. Relative to Trains and mails. THE train which left here yesterday morning had uot got as far as Tiltou station up to 2.15 o'clock this afternoon. A continuation of drifts and a formation of ioe impeding. The train which Left Harbor Grace the same time, arrived here at 1.15 o'clock this afternoon. There came passengers from Whitbourne : Hon. Robert Hond, Inspector Watson, and special officer P. Hanley, and Mr. Dryer. There was a big lot of work running the cars into the station, all the track had to be shovelled and picked out. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY. ll* CMieetoK Will Visit the Various Wards To-Jlorro%v. 'Editor Evening Telegram./ Sir,— I wish to call theatteutiouof the charitably-disposed that on to-morrow, Tuesday, the members of tli«* Society of st. Vincent de Paul, duly appointed by the Society at its usual meeting on Sunday last.will visit as collectors, the various wards, to solicit funds to enable the Society to relieve tlte wants of the really distressed poor of the city. This Society »•'•'<!> no extended remarks from mc as to the greatness of its benefit- in the past to the deserving poor: its universality. Hkc true charity it>elf, in its selection of those to whom it lias brought comfort by the relief of every want and distress : its knowiuo- of no creed when its one object and aim were present, viz: the abject Want of the Necessaries of Life —these qualitie>, with many other salient ('haraeteri?tics of the Society of St. Yinpenl iV Paul, and the work it hr\< done in tbe past, are but too well known to the public of St. John's: anal for this reason the people need no incentive to arouse their admiration of a SoQiety which carried on a mission so noblfe in their midst for many years. It i< fco&e hoped, then, that these gentlemen, or/their mission as servants of the poor, will meet with that success so beneficial as to enable them to relieve the wants of the needy poor of the city daring this winter. It would be well, also, to state that the Society would be glad to receive into their body such members who are debarred, for various reasons, from taking an active part in the Society's work anion*; the poor. They would, however, be effectual as honorary members iv the furtherance of its mission by an annual subscription, and thus, by enlarging its treasury, would extend its usefulness for £ood to a much more considerable extent. Yours sincerely. (REV.) < . H. O'NEILL, Feb. 17, L 896. Spiritual Director. NEW 4DVERTISEIVIEWTV Auction—shares Fohn T. Gillard Auction—herring, etc F. B. Curran & Co Auction -cabbage, etc M A.
