The Turkish Government Denies Correctness of Armenian Reports — Grip Epidemic iv New York-A London Anarchists Seized a Special Agent of the French Police. Halifax N.S-, Jan. 10. The Turkish Government strongly denies the correctness of the reports of Armenian massacres. Grip is becoming epidemic in New York city. London anarchists eeiaed a special agent of the French polite and compelled him to divulge the state secrets in his possession. The German Emperor urges the Reichstag to strengthen the navy. Tariff didiculties between Spain and the United States have been settled amicably — Spain coucedes a minimum rate of tariff on imports from Cuba and Porto Kico. m ••. -o» {Special to the Evening Telegram.) Cai'e Race, This Evening An unknown steamer and the schooner Primrose passed west at 5.30 a.m., wind north, fresh, fine aud clear. Bar. 30.20 ; ther. 20. UNSEATED AND DISQUALIFIED! Is it the Beginning of the End ? Editor Evening Telegram. Sir,—In reading over the interesting Annual Report of tbe Total Abstinence and Benefit Society, and the election of its worthy ollicers for the coming year, as published in your popular journal a few days ago, one is forcibly struck at no longer beholding the name of the former Secretary, amongst those gentlemen reelected to olliee. Is it true then that the said Secretary, Morine's Secretary, has been "unseated and disqualified?" We ought not feel surprised at this, as no respectable body of men could have the name of Such an Obnoxious Individual on their roll of honour. Only a short while since and he professed openly to have turned Turk. I did look on him always as a Tartar, The T. A. and B. Society have no desire to honour such men. Oh! Herald, to what depths thou hast fallen! Is it, Mr. Editor, " the beginning of the cml?" I am, yours, &c, X Y.Z St. John's, Jan. lU, 1895. - — in ■ UNSEEMLY CONDUCT ♦ And a Source of Annoyance. (Edlt.nr Evening Telegram.j Dear Sin,—I was much pained by the whistling and disorderly observations which which dropped from the lips of a few persons iv the gallery of the Assembly last evening —to the embarrassment of every one on the floors of the House. I say a few; because the whistling, though seemingly emanating from several, was really the act of ©be only, who kept repeating his misdeed; and the loud observations were made by two or at most three acters. Their behaviour was entirely at variance with the peaceable And Orderly Demeanor of the multitude of listeners in the gallery (by which I mean the upper auditorium), and shows lo my mind lhat those gross breaches of decorum were the work of Tory rowdies, "Like master, like man;" the one rivals the " unco* quid." and irreproachable manners of the " Man who broke the bauk at Monte Carlo" in his gentlemanly "operations;" and the other, a stranger to the civilised veneer of the Monaco gambler, can lead processions of laborers under the guise of his being a <>OYCi-iiiuciit Supporter, and with lusty lungs, clamor for the lk people's rights, yet all the while be one who last fall served the state as " a walking boss on the roads " and an active and respected agent of the deposed powers who used to be. The great body of listeners in the gallery yesterday were undoubtedly supporters of the Whiteway Tarty, and they exhibited it iv the passive and respectful tone of their conduct; this, too, despite the disappointment of their expectations of Hearing a Debate — resulting from the early and sudden adjournment. Theobjectionablee bulitions referred to mark an overbearing, ignorant nature; and, as they are the premeditated work of opponents of the Whiteway Party, I beg to suggest lhat four policemen be detailed, one to each quarter of the galley, and that any similar demonstrations be dealt with by the offender being taken by his long ears and '* shown outside." Yours truly, 81-METALTST. St. John's, Jan. :», '95. LOCAL OCCURRENCES. For Transaction of Business,— The Bank of Montreal is now in full swing for the transaction of public business. _—. Crown vs. Cooke et \i.. — The hearing in this case was postponed from Tuesday last to next Monday, 14th inst, at 5.30 p.m. Passengers.—By the S. S. Lady Glover, ("apt. Obediah Joyce, from Harbor Grace, there came as saloon passengers :—Capts. Butt and Fitzgerald, and one other captain. _«. Hi: Advised Patience.—His Lordship Bishop Jones arrived from Harbor Grace this afternoon. At a meeting there last night he referred to the Gnancial crisis and advised patience. _♦_ Week of Prayek.—Meeting tonight in the Congregational Church. Subject: " Foreign Missions." Rev. A. I). Morton to speak. Members of the choir are requested to attend, and all members of the congregation arc specially requested to bring their hymn-books with them. Tin: Night Scuool.—The number of boys attending the Night School at present is very discouraging, there being only 175 there on previous nights. We again remind those who have not the opportunity of attending day school lo come and embrace this noble work. There is accommodation for 1.75 boys more. -♦- Ni<iiiT School Progress.—We are glad to see that so many of the night school boys have come forward since the Christmas vacation. There are many others who have not yet attended, and it is hoped that they will take this notilication and present themselves. There were 175 in the school last night, but we expect at least 100 more. The Political Parson.—We are pleased to find that the political parson, to whom we casually referred in yesterday's issue of the Telegram, is not, after all, too obtuse and dense to appreciate our kindly hints and suggestions. Last evening, he made an open confession of his weakness, " in the sanctuary, before the people." Of course, we cannot vouch for his sincerity, or veracity either! Aurf.sted o\ the Steamer.-Peter Carrigan was about leaving on the Corean last night, and was placed under arrest. He took an occasional shout with others during the excitement, was singled out and taken off. People who were on the wharf at the time express strongly their indignation at the manner in which he and others were treated. The shackles were locked on him, he thrown on his back and run down the gangway, and when lbs people resented they were charged upon with wielded baltons. Policemen should remember that they should be guardians of the peace, not open disturbers, and not be carried away with the idea: We can do as we like; we will be listened to and you will not. Carrigan should have been permitted to travel, particularly as times are.-Com. A Noble Example.—Onr fellowtownsman, Mr. William English, has shown a noble example of what can be done by a people to help those of their countrymen who are in distress. He has generously contributed one thousand loaves of bread to be divided among the poor of different denominations. To Rev. Mr. Dunfield, 200; Rev. A. 1). Morton, 200; Rev. I. O'Brien, Cathedral, S00; Rev. J. Ryan, Riverhead. 300; to be given out during the month of January. Those who can afford to help those in distress ought to go and do likewise. It is by such generous acts as that of Mr. English that we can hope to tide ourselves over this important crisis, brought on by those who, living most extravagantly, on the substance of others, have brought desolation and even death to some of our once happy homes. — .♦ . m A FEW QUESTIONS • About Current Incidents. (Editor Evening Telegram.) Mb. Editor,—As this is the age of queries, it may not be out of place to ask what interest had the Herald gang in following with evident delight, which was unmistakably depicted upon their countenances, that crowd of boys who wended their way up Water Street on Tuesday evening? Did they want " Bread or Work?"' A little of the latter would do them no harm. Of the former, undoubtedly, they have An Abundant Supply. When is the Customs Department going to get rid of " Harry?" As there is nothing for him to do but smoke a long pipe all day long, greatly to the annoyance of visitors who enter the department for the transactiontransaction of busines in which "Little Harry" is a junior landing waiter. It is anything but pleasant to have a puff of tobacco smoke cross the desk directly in one's face; and especially disagreeable is the sensation to one not Addicted to the lies ofTabacco Would it not be a saving to the colony of 81100 per year? Would it not be a nuisance removed from a public oliice? Would it not be a comfort to " Little Harry," if he would remain in his chimney-corner and smoke himself into " thin air?" Yours, &c, ETIQUETTE. St. John's, Jan. Oth, 1894. 1 111 ■ WEEK OF UNITED PRAYER In connection with the above the following meetings will be held during this week:— On Thursday, in the Congregational Ch. Speaker: Rev. A. 1). Morton, M.A..
