ELI MERCER Presumably at Red Bay—Much and Very Sincerely Regretted —Bay Roberts Loses a Foremost I»lan— The Body to be Brought Home. (Special to the Evening Telegram.) Bay Roberts, This Afternoon. From Tilt Cove yesterday the sad intelligence of the death of Mr. EH Mercer, better known as " the King," was received. Mr. Mercer died on the 4th instant, and therefore must have expired about the time he was removing from One Steamer to the Other at Red Bay. In his death Bay Robberts has lost one of its foremost men ; and his demise,although not unexpected, is much and very sincerely regretted. His body is coming per "Virginia Lake," and, in all probability, will be laid to rest in the Church of Kngland burying ground on Sunday. Mr. Mercer was about sixty years of age. Special to the Evening Telegram, Trei'ASSEY, This Afternoou. H. M. S. C|oMM(»w,wttli His Excellency Governor O'Brien arrived at 10.30, accompanied by his secretary and Commodore Curzou-llowc. Rev. Wm. Born kindly had His Carriage in Waiting for his Excellency on landing. Hi 3 Excellency was met by the Magistrate. Mr. \T. L. Murphy and Mr. A. Simms and conducted to the Tempereucellall,amidst Cheering and Firing of Onus, where the Rev. Wni. Borne w:w awaiting to receive him. A most suitable address was prepared and read to His Excellency by the magistrate, and replied to by His Excellency. Then the party visited the Convent school room, where another address was presented and presented To Him by the Children. His Excellency was very much pleased with the way the school was conducted by the good nuns. From there they visited the couvent where the Reverend Mother and Sisters gave him a light lunch and spent a happy hour. After a procession of the inhabitants was formpd and had walked through the harbor, which was decorated here and there with arches and Hags, His Excellency and suite visited J. L. Murphy's, where another light tench was prepared for them. Owing to the short stay, it was the intention of His Excellency lunching with liev. Wm. Born, who would have given him A Itight Hearty Welcome at his parochial residence. It was the intention to illuminate all the houses and to light bonfires, tar barrels, etc., to-night if His Excellency could remain. But, the fog setting in, hurried them up, and they Ifft for Placentia at 1.30 p.m., amidst, cheers for the Governor and lady, Commodore Curzou-Howe and also the Governor's Secretary. Today will be remembered by Many, as, I think, this is the fust official visit of any Governor to Trepassey. Special U> the Evening Telegram. Caps Race, This Evening. Scddek Death ok William Stel'UKx.—A cable message has been received announcing the sudden death yesterday, at Dundee, of Mr. William Stephen, who had suffered several years from various complaints. He was about •!<> years of age, and was of the firm of Alexander Stephen & Son*, of Dundee, and of William Stephen a. Co., St. .John's. He has been out here on more than one occasion. ELI MERCER Presumably at Red Bay—Much and Very Sincerely Regretted —Bay Roberts Loses a Foremost I»lan— The Body to be Brought Home. (Special to the Evening Telegram.) Bay Roberts, This Afternoon. From Tilt Cove yesterday the sad intelligence of the death of Mr. EH Mercer, better known as " the King," was received. Mr. Mercer died on the 4th instant, and therefore must have expired about the time he was removing from One Steamer to the Other at Red Bay. In his death Bay Robberts has lost one of its foremost men ; and his demise,although not unexpected, is much and very sincerely regretted. His body is coming per "Virginia Lake," and, in all probability, will be laid to rest in the Church of Kngland burying ground on Sunday. Mr. Mercer was about sixty years of age. Special to the Evening Telegram, Trei'ASSEY, This Afternoou. H. M. S. C|oMM(»w,wttli His Excellency Governor O'Brien arrived at 10.30, accompanied by his secretary and Commodore Curzou-llowc. Rev. Wm. Born kindly had His Carriage in Waiting for his Excellency on landing. Hi 3 Excellency was met by the Magistrate. Mr. \T. L. Murphy and Mr. A. Simms and conducted to the Tempereucellall,amidst Cheering and Firing of Onus, where the Rev. Wni. Borne w:w awaiting to receive him. A most suitable address was prepared and read to His Excellency by the magistrate, and replied to by His Excellency. Then the party visited the Convent school room, where another address was presented and presented To Him by the Children. His Excellency was very much pleased with the way the school was conducted by the good nuns. From there they visited the couvent where the Reverend Mother and Sisters gave him a light lunch and spent a happy hour. After a procession of the inhabitants was formpd and had walked through the harbor, which was decorated here and there with arches and Hags, His Excellency and suite visited J. L. Murphy's, where another light tench was prepared for them. Owing to the short stay, it was the intention of His Excellency lunching with liev. Wm. Born, who would have given him A Itight Hearty Welcome at his parochial residence. It was the intention to illuminate all the houses and to light bonfires, tar barrels, etc., to-night if His Excellency could remain. But, the fog setting in, hurried them up, and they Ifft for Placentia at 1.30 p.m., amidst, cheers for the Governor and lady, Commodore Curzou-Howe and also the Governor's Secretary. Today will be remembered by Many, as, I think, this is the fust official visit of any Governor to Trepassey. Special U> the Evening Telegram. Caps Race, This Evening. A woman employed in the House of Commons has died of cholera. Thirty provinces of Bosnia arc full of cholera. Scddek Death ok William Stel'UKx.—A cable message has been received announcing the sudden death yesterday, at Dundee, of Mr. William Stephen, who had suffered several years from various complaints. He was about •!<> years of age, and was of the firm of Alexander Stephen & Son*, of Dundee, and of William Stephen a. Co., St. .John's. He has been out here on more than one occasion.
