A very destructive forest fire has been ragiug through the country since last week. It originated, apparently, on the Southern Shore, and weuded its way westward until meeting tbe heavy timber between Saltnonier aud Holyrood It then changed its course towards tbe latter place. The smoke was so »»«>iiM* Here Lisas Nffflit that it wa9 dillicult to breathe or move around. The hills were all ablaze here this morning ; but, thanks to kind Providence, to-day's rain has saved much property from fire and materially helped to advance vegetation. The few people available here have just goue to the woods to kill out the few smouldering embers remaining after tbe raiu. LOCAL EVENTS. 1 Striking ln.~Codfish were striking into LaPoile tbis morning. .» A False Alarm.—The lire-hclla were rung out this forenoon for what wa9 thought to be the burniDg of Mr. Koas'a house, near Vidi Lake. He was engaged burning oyster shells aud gatbage for fertilizing purposes, and by reason of this the false alarm was given m Arrival of the S.S. " Carthaginian."'—The -ttamtr Carthaginian arrived here at 8 o'clock ibis morning from Liverpool. She discharged three hundred and ten tone of freight, but takes very little outward. Hut a few pasteDgera arrived by her, viz : Mr. .!. Valentine, aud two in second cabin. Amooget the passengers for Halifax are Archbishop <>'Brien, Bishop Mac Donald Hnd Father Murphy. A very destructive forest fire has been ragiug through the country since last week. It originated, apparently, on the Southern Shore, and weuded its way westward until meeting tbe heavy timber between Saltnonier aud Holyrood It then changed its course towards tbe latter place. The hills were all ablaze here this morning ; but, thanks to kind Providence, to-day's rain has saved much property from fire and materially helped to advance vegetation. The few people available here have just goue to the woods to kill out the few smouldering embers remaining after tbe raiu.
