THE EVENING TELEGRAM. VOL. 14. PRICE : ONE CENT. ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, TUESDAY, MARCH i, 1892. $3.00 PER ANNUM. No. 51. NOTES OF THE DAY. A comprehensive report of Rev. Brother Slavery's brilliant lecture before tbe Athenaeum last evening will appear in these columns to-morrow. ♦ Out Harbor Grace contemporary has a weather prophet—a genuine edition of tbe late Mr. Wiggins. He looks into the future, and sends a shiver through us by predicting tbat " we are going to have tbe heaviest March weather for years." ♦ The steamer Numidian, with tbe Newfoundland buyers on board, has arrived at Moville; so says a message from Mr. Blair, received bere by Mr. Simpson this morning. It is presumed tbat tbe Numidian had a good run across. ♦ We are glad to leatn from the Hcn'ble Bobert Bond tbat a subscription in aid of tbe Trinity Bay sufferers will be opened at once, and tbat His Excellency tbe Governor has generously offered to head the list with a handsome subscription. Thus we bave already a tangible proof of practical sympathy.♦ A racy account, from the pen of Rev. S. Soowden, of an important religious meeting at Old Perlican, appears on our third page to-day. We also publish, on the same page, an interesting reference to a contemplated lecture, at Springfield, Mass., by Rev. Richard Howley, D.D , on t4 Home Role for Ireland." «. The adjournment of tbe Assembly, yesterday, out of regaid for tbe feelings of Trinity's bereaved people, will be regarded as a touching expression of the whole colony's sympathy. Every district of the island is represented in the popular branch of our local Legislature, and the Hon. Colonial Secretary did well to avail of tbe oppoitunity thus afforded biin of voicing the universal sorrow. + We learn from tbe Trinity Record tbat deer are reported plentiful ou tbe Downs— a famous deer-country come miles inside of Shoal Harbor. A number of persons from Indian Arm were in tbere bunting a few days since and killed between twenty and thirty deer. The same paper tells us tbat Mr. George Fleet, of Cuckold's Cove, one j of the uio-t energetic trappers in tbat direction, on visiting one of bis traps, a few days since, found in it a very valuable black fox—a good specimen, one tbat will likely bring its possessor a handsome return. ♦ Bpbakikg of tbe sudden death of Mrs. Winsor at Harbor Grace, the Standard says :—"Mrs.G.Winsor of Carbonear (wbo received an attack of paralysis at Mr. E. Parsons' photographic rooms at 1 o'clock on Tuesday last) succumbed to tbe disease, passing away at balf-pa*t six o'clock the same evening. Mrs. Winsor and her busband were at tbe rooms to have their photograph taken, and while preparing for tbe sitting the was noticed to partly fall and lean on Mr. Winsor. Mr. Parsons conveyed ber to bis bouse and bad remedies applied. Dr. Allan was sent for and all that medical skill could do to raise tbe sinking spirit was done. It was apparent from tbe first tbat tbere was no hope of ber recovery. Rh» rremained iv a semi-conecious state until about six, when a slight change for the better was observed, but tbis was tbe final effort of ber strength, and half an hour after she passed away. Her body was prepared and laid out, and as soon as the coilin could be bad she was placed in it. At 9.30 o'clock, some of ber family having arrived from Carbonear, she was taken from Mr. Parsons' bouse and conveyed home. The case is a very -ad one, and much sympathy is expressed for Mr. Winsor and his family. Mrs. Winsor was about 60 years of age. Tbis fact is a point in favor of tbe Ulster's chances. ♦ Where Enjoyment Reigns.—Good skating on a splendid sheet of ice at tbe Parade Rink witb orchestral music ought surely be attraction to make a Terra Novan evening like tbis pass pelasantly. The S.S. " Curlew's" Report.-Tfae steamer Curlew, from tbe Westward, reports a rather dull cod-fishery at Channel and Rose Blanche, owing to want of bait. New Safety Explosive .:. ROBURITE! .:. This is a newly-invented explosive, lately introduced and largely used in England, Germany, Spain, Turkey, Australia and New South Wales. IDOBURITE is especially valuable on account ef the perfect safety with which it may be bandied, transported, and stored. Neither friction, percussion, nor heat will cause it to explode, and it is only when primed by a specially strong detonator that it can be exploded. It has the following special properties and advantage* over all other explosives:— Roburite cannot be made to explode by concussion, by pressure, friction, nor by fire, lightning, or electricity. Koblirite can be made to explode only by the insertion of a strong detonating cap into the cartridge, and is therefore perfectly safe and free from danger under all conditions of transit, storage, and handling. Koblirite contains no nltro-giyeei ine, and is therefore not subject to tbe excessive danger from change of temperature and thawing. Roburite does not freeze. Roburite may be hammered between two Steele plates, and a red hot Iron may be inserted into it, free of danger. Roburite has the further advantage of giving oft no noxious fumes, and not pulverizing the material blasted, and miners may re-enter the galleries Immediately after a shot is fired. Roburite is practically Hameless, and can be safely used in fiery mines, neither line dust nor gases being exploded by it. Roburite is of less specific gravity than dynamite, in the ratio of 2 to 3, but weight for weight it is found to be 25 per cent, more powerful mid 100 times more safe. Robnrite compares with gunpowder as 4 to 1, weight for weight, />., 4 oz. of Roburite will do the work of l-lb. of blasting gunpowder. 30 Cases received per steamer Havana, and 5 M.
